My cat had an episode of hypoglycemia yesterday. I found him lying down and drooling all over himself with a glazed over look in his eyes. I fed him some honey right away called the vet and got a good meal in him. He seems better but still kinda drolly. I'm very terrified of giving more insulin and having it happen again. The vet said that it happens sometimes and just to make sure he has a good meal before his next shot. I did and like I said he's just a little drolly still. Does anyone know if it takes a few days for them to feel better after an episode? I need some reassurance...he's my little baby and that was scary seeing him like that.

Please tell us:
  1. what insulin you use
  2. what dose your kitty gets
  3. whether you've been taught to test blood glucose at home.
Hypo episodes can be avoided if you learn to test blood glucose at home. We can help you with that.

He get 5 units of vetsulin. We just upped his dosage. I don't do home testing but I am curious about how it's done...he hates it when the vet does it. His last reading was at 481 when he was on 3 units a day. I feed him purina cat chow. I'm aware that it's not the best...would be open to some suggestions of a good brand to try. This is all very new and overwhelming...thanks!

Quick analysis:
  1. 5 units of Vetsulin is a huge dose
  2. 3 units was probably too high and caused the rebound that gave high blood glucose at the vet's office.
  3. the high carb dry food you're feeding is probably preventing more hypos than you've had already
  4. hypos should not be taken lightly!!

5 units is a humongous dose. Huge.

Please go back to 1 unit until you are home testing.

I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC.
