My cat is currently having an issue. She woke me appx 45 minutes ago, meowing pitifully and not able to move around. I have been giving sugar water (unable to test; had this issue several months ago and on the advice of my vet, used the sugar water and she got better. I carried her to vet early next morning for follow up).

But it's 1:30 here and there is no emergency vet here and I am scared. She was diagnosed 2 years ago. Started on 3 units Novalin a.m. and again p.m. Presently on 1 unit a.m. and 1/2 unit p.m. I just need to know what else I can do. She refuses to eat (I've tried to force it, but have been able to get the sugar water in her. Can I do anything else? Am trying to remain calm, but so afraid she is going to seize and die before morning. When she cries, I don't know if she's in pain. The last time this happened, vet also suggested small dose of pain meds to keep her comfortable, so I've already done that tonight. She'll be still for a bit, then try to move around and cry out. I keep giving small amts of sugar water (tried Karo syrup - not good).

Do you know how to put 911 in front of your thread? It will help attract attention. I am not very experienced but I am going to find someone to help yo now

I've tried; no luck getting the blood. She just moved from her pallet and staggered around. She is now panting. Never done this before; I'm terrified.

How far away is the nearest emergency vet? If you can not test, I would take her to the vet as soon as possible.

This is a crisis. Isn't there any emergency vet near you? What happened with the karo? That would be my first line of defense - who knows how concentrated the sugar water is.

You can administer corn syrup rectally if you have a syringe without a needle, like one that you might give oral meds with.

I would try it in her mouth, rub it on her gums if she won't eat it. Administer it rectally and it will absorb through her mucous membranes.

If you can get to an ER, go, take the corn syrup with you and your glucometer.

No emergency vet here. It will be morning before I can get her to vet. I could give fluids if that would help, but don't know if it will. She is panting heavily and trying to move around.

Just tried the Karo; got a little on her gums, but she is panting and thrashing around. This happened so suddenly

I got some honey on her gums, too, but I think she has started seizing. Her mouth is open and pupils are enlarged; breathing not good. I'm still trying.

I'm trying to get a better handle on the situation. Are you using Novolin N? How many hours ago did you shoot?

Have you called your vet? Most have an emergency number. Your kitty needs a glucose drip at the vet. Please call immediately.

This is so beyond what we can deal with at home. I can't encourage you enough - phone that ER vet, tell them you're coming in with a diabetic cat that is seizing, take the karo syrup with you and pull over every 10 minutes or so and get more on her gums or in her rectum.

You really need the vet and a glucose drip. Go. Really.

I tried the Karo syrup; not able to inject that way. Was trying to call vet; I lost Clara. This can't be happening.

I agree. She absolutely needs to go to the vet.

You said you shot at 8:30 and N can peak 4-6 hours after the shot but some cats can get much longer duration. This means you could be dealing with a hypo for hours. She needs to be at the vet.

She gave insulin at 8:30pm and it was 01:30am when she posted so right at insulin peak...roughly 5 -5.5 hours post shot.
Thanks...I read back and saw it....I was trying to read quickly to get the background.

Denise....are you still there? Did you check very closely for a pulse or heartbeat? I'm so terribly, terribly sorry if she is gone.

Oh, Denise, I am so, so sorry your beloved girl has gone. (((hugs)))

Fly free, sweet Clara, and land softly at the Bridge cat_wings>o

Yes, she's gone. That's her in my picture. I've had her for 16-17 years, but it's never long enough. Thanks to Clara, I learned to give fluids and injections, something I thought I could never do. I want to thank everyone who jumped in with advice/suggestions to help. It all happened so fast with no warning signs.

There's something special about a tuxedo cat. I have one, McGee, who looks a lot like your sweet Clara. We all understand how precious the love of a cat is, Denise. You're right, even 16-17 years isn't long enough.

I'm sending lots of love your way.

We never have enough time with our beloved furbabies. Hold tight to all your wonderful memories of Clara, and she will live on in your heart until you are reunited at the Rainbow Bridge.

So sorry to hear Clara has left you (((((Denise))))

I didn't want to add to the voices but have been watching
Fly free sweet Clara and land softly....there are many friends at the Bridge to welcome you until the one you love most comes to be with you forever cat_wings>o

(((Denise))) she is beautiful and I am very sorry this has happened to you both. My heart weeps for you.

Gentle journey, sweet Clara. :rb_icon:

I'm so very sorry for your loss Denise. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: Clara knows she was loved and she will be waiting for you at the bridge. Rest in peace sweet Clara! cat_wings>o

Right now, I'm a mess. We have other kitties, but Clara was my bed buddy. She didn't get along with most of the other cats, so she had a special room all to herself, with limited visits from a few of the other fur-kids (the ones she would tolerate). On Christmas Day, we took individual pics of them, wearing either reindeer antlers or Santa hat. I never imagined that would be the last pic I would have of her. It's going to be a long night.

(((((Denise)))))
I'm so sorry this happened. My heart hurts for you and my thoughts are with you.

((Denise))

I am so so sorry to hear that Clara has crossed the bridge. Sending prayers and strength for you at this very difficult time.
