But I'm still afraid to give him his insulin because I'll be leaving for work soon and I will not be able to check him again until around 11pm tonight.
Understandably
you are seeing some evidence that his regular dose may be a little high for him at the moment with that 55 and then yesterday's 44. Usually, with a longer-term diabetic we would say they need to go under 50 3 times to earn a reduction on Lantus, but given his reaction to it we can't be sure that he didn't go lower than that 44 and it's possible that the dose has been too high for some time now. His early Lantus dosing looks as though you may have been trying to partially use a sliding scale and the doses were taken up overall fairly quickly during your first couple of weeks. There is a possibility that you may have skipped over a dose that would have worked better for him at the time during those first 2 weeks. I would maybe try a half dose to see how he does with it and take things from there.
I agree, though equally I worry whether that is too much to reduce by.
He was up to 3.5 u of Prozinc, though with the data we can't see if he dropped low, lowest we saw on prozinc was 139, usually when swapping that dose should have been taken into account, so should have started on 3u, since Chester had already been on insulin the starting dose of 0.25u of Lantus was too low. Perhaps that's the reason it went up quick.
That all said, that was a loooong time ago, 7 months is a long time in FD and what we do know is that our kitties insulin needs change as time passes. So, I'm going to nag again, we need to see some data for the last couple of weeks so we can give you some well informed advice, otherwise we are really just playing dose lottery with Chester, dropping him down too far has it's own set of very serious complications (DKA), and continuing on too high of a dose could prove tragic.
I'm going to be very direct here, have you been testing every day??? Have you actually got any data for the last couple of weeks??? I'm not asking it to be judgy, it's OK if you haven't, I don't need explanations, but if you haven't got any data, we can work with you to help you gather the data you need to try and move forward.
But if you have got data, give us what you have and we can work from there.
In order for us to be able to answer you questions and help you best we could really do with you updating the last couple of weeks on the ss. I used to do it on my cell phone all the time.
Lastly, thanks for posting, I've been thinking about him all day and hoping to hear that he was feeling better.
