First post here so forgive my newbie ness. Our cat who was recently hospitalized for dka is experiencing something new. His BG for the last 12 hour checks has bern in the 40's. He is being fed low carb fancy feast and ate a can ( more than he has eaten since coming home from hospital) and his bf goes down. I am having ti give supplical to get it up as food is not working like it normally would. He us usually high, thus the dka but has now gone to the other extreme when he came home from hospital he was put on 3 units 2x a day. He went high a couple if tines so was raised ti 4. Ten ver lowered it back to 3. We took in in for electrolytes test on Wednesday and he was on low end of normal mode with more low than high readings, he was lowered to 2.5 units. This morning he was 45. I fed 1 can ( he is now in 12 hour diet). And he was at 43, and then 41 gave supplical and he is now in the 50's. I have not given insulin as the vet said only give 1 unit if he gets above 100. Anyone else have this deal where he eats and then drips in BG? Just curious.

Good morning! and Welcome.

If you are using Lantus and you have been giving 2 to 3 units twice a day, your cat still has insulin on board. Lantus builds a shed, and it will be available for two to three days after insulin is stopped.

Congratulations on home testing. That's a major hurdle for many diabetic cat owners.

I would suggest you split up his feeding to 3 or 4 feedings while you are trying to get his blood sugars up to the 80 to 100 level. I let my diabetics graze on the wet food that I feed.

Questions, please keep asking. We're here to help.
