Lots of pee, but no diabetes

I just walked in on my civie in litter box. (Sorry, Spuds!!) But I couldn't believe how much he peed! I normally check him now when I check Shiloh periodically. His last test about 4 weeks ago was 57. Any ideas about what else I should look for, or what I should ask my vet about?
 
Rule out diabetes and kidney disease first, then you can consider more obscure things like diabetes insipidus if the urine specific gravity is low (<1020). How old is Spuds?
 
I'm in the same boat as you right now, Rhonda. My civvie's pee is getting more dilute. We're going to the vet in a few weeks for a urine protein:creatinine ratio, USG, and bloodwork. Fingers and paws crossed for both you guys and us!

Must be something going on if you've never noticed big pee's before. Best to get it checked it out. Goof always did have big pee's so it was hard to tell when he became diabetic.
 
I can't say I didn't realize it before. I just attributed it to Shiloh's diabetes. But only noticed a small decrease after she was diagnosed and treated. I've just never caught him in the litter box and seen how long he was peeing.
 
And just wanted to add, I have observed no real behavioral changes. He was throwing up ALOT more when I was feeding him the 9 lives. Only see one pukus since I switched him back to Friskies, and it was a small hair ball.
 
Truthfully, I never really paid attention to any of the kitties sandbox habits, but I wish I had. Maybe I'd have caught Goofs illness sooner.....
 
I noticed Squallie's excess thirst and urination almost immediately, but when I asked my vet if it could be attributed to diabetes, she said no, she didn't think so. She finally tested him for diabetes 4½ months later. I am still angry that she didn't test and diagnose him when he first started showing obvious symptoms. :(
 
Did you figure a cause for Spud's urine output? My neighbor just asked me over to test the semi-feral they have been looking after (long story) because they have noticed increased thirst, increased urine and maybe a little muscle wasting. She tested 81 on my Relion. I was just about to do a search here to see if I could find any alternative causes of those symptoms. She was hospitalized last year with CRF (so it could be that) but these symptoms are new since ~September. Eating/pooping fine. Maybe less preening. Seemed engaged when I was there. I didn't think about diabetes insipidus, I wonder how often that occurs with CRF kitties.

The incidence of diabetes insipidus is independent of CRF. It's usually an issue with either the pituitary or the adrenal glands, and no matter what, it's incredibly rare in cats. Speckles was the first reported cat case of partial DI since the mid-1970s in the veterinary literature; though I remain convinced that part of rarity is due to vets not thinking to test cats for it. In your case, I would probably make sure the kidneys haven't gotten any worse before trying to look into a lot of other differential diagnoses. It could also be a kidney infection...
 
I haven't yet. Things have improved. But I have now noticed that he is meowing a lot when he is drinking. I have an appointment next week for him.
