? Lost both kitties, 2 new (non DB) have food questions

Hi,

It's been a very long time since I have been here - over two years. Before I go any further, I want to say that I do not currently have a cat with FD dx. I am here b/c I have in the past and feel this is the one place I can always come for help, support and connection – even if it is to direct me to a more appropriate site/forum.

I know I don’t have to give you the following background, but sometimes I think it is helpful to know. If you’d rather skip it, I understand – go to next paragraph.

I doubt many, if any, will remember Kyndra and me. She died 7/13/12 from cancer (LDS, unrelated to FD). Her BG stayed surprisingly regular thru most of her 4 month struggle (insulin 1x/day). 2 years later Líta was dx with lymphoma (3/14), I came here looking for help and was sent to a lymphoma board, which was very helpful. I lost her 6/29/14. I could not get another cat b/c I was living with a friend. Fortunately, she has a very friendly, loving torti so at least when I reached out my hand there was often purring fur to cuddle up with.

I moved in January and decided to wait until I knew my finances were stable. The void was killing me. This was the first time in over 30 years I have not have at least one feline companion.

A week ago, today I adopted two kittens (3 & 8 mos.) from a local rescue. These were not feral, born in a foster home, but their moms were. The rescue fed (wet) friskier, 9-lives, etc. and Purina kitten chow for dry b/c it is less expensive. I can’t fault them. I got it but have switched to fancy feast – they go crazy for it!! I know it is not ideal, but I feel a little better than the other ones. I have not had a kitten or even a cat less than one year for a very, very long time. I am on a tight budget and was shocked at how the prices on grain free food have gone up. It makes me worry about what I can afford to feed them :-( I am not sure how much to feed them (can kittens be over fed?) and if you have suggestions for quality, but not $1.50/can. I will eventually stop feeding the dry. At least this time I know and will do everything I can to avoid another FD dx.

Wow, this is quite long for just a few simple questions. My apologies. I do not want to take up anymore precious time and space way from those who need FD support, so maybe someone can direct me to another board to help. I looked at a few but did not feel confident.

Hi Bonnie! Nice to 'see' you again!!! Yep I'm still around too...KT crossed but we now have Dakota as our 'extra sweet' boy.

Suggestion - I discovered that Special Kitty wet from Walmart in the 13 oz cans at $.70/can goes over here quite well! I can feed a meal for 5 kitties from each can. There IS a 22 oz can for $1 but mine don't like the food in those...it IS different. It sure makes the money go a LOT further. It doesn't spike Dakota even as much as Friskies...

I'd rather find some that at the least has meat as the first ingredient, thus fancy feast for now. Would like to find reasonably priced grain free and/or healthier product, but realize I may need to make some compromises.

Hello, I can't answer about the wet food. But I can on the dry. Purina Beyond is grain free and a few months ago was rated one of the top 3 commercial diets as far as quality ingredients. They do have wet but I've never used it.
 
You could look into Wellness, they have a grain-free variety. Price-wise I think it falls somewhere in between Fancy Feast and the high-$$ stuff. I fed it for a couple of months but my guys lost interest in it so I had to move on to something else. The ones I like the best and that have been the most successful for us have been the raw foods-we did Nature's Variety Instinct Frozen Raw for a while, and lately Stella & Chewy's dehydrated raw. All four of my cats really love both of them.
