Hi friends, Baby is a 13 year old (will be 14 years in March) Diabetic & has lost her appetite. She vomited last 24 hours ago, I took her to vet yesterday & has lost a few ounces - now weighs 12.1 lbs, 102.8 temp: eyes, ears, mouth, look good.

Cerenia given for nausea, Mirtazapine given for appetite stimulant, Sub-Q fluids with 1 vitamin B-12 1000 mg injection given too.

She has urinated in the past 12 hours & had a tiny movement at Vets & looked at under microscope - he didn't see anything abnormal.

We came home & she looks great but still only had only a few licks of moist food. Now it's the middle of the night, can't even get her to eat anything - 100% not interested. Even offered dry "!!!"

I plan to call vet in morning & have blood work done & X-ray of her tummy.

I am doing ok, just staying strong & hopeful, but scared since her appetite stimulant did not work.

Any other thoughts on something to ask Vet to give her?

Stay strong Nicole. I wish you the Best Of Luck at the vet's today.
How is she acting? Does she go to the food bowl and sniff it and walk away?
Have you tested her blood sugar lately?

Did the vet mention anything about constipation? Sometimes if things get a little backed up - even a piece that other stuff can move around - it may reduce appetite.
A good resource for learning about the feline GI tract is Feline Constipation.

Hi Dyana, thank you for your reply ... I apologize for my lack thereof -- attending to her & facebook updates - I neglected here. I know you are caught up.

BJM, it is not constipation, but I appreciate your information link!! I recall you being good with lab results ... would you mind taking a look?

Symptoms: Initial - Vomiting, then not eating. Diabetic and took into vet - thought an upset tummy - so gave anti vomiting and appy stimulant - anit vomiting worked - appy stim did not.

Became increasingly concerned due to not eating - did blood work, started syringe feeding - blood work came back indicative of infection and low thyroid. x-rays show inflammation - next stop is ultrasound. Concerns: Cancer, Pancreatitis, IBD.

Waiting for all test to come back. Still not eating on her own (since Wednesday) syringe feeding and fluids. Is in pain (on Bupe), stays in one position all day - but keeping all (7) meds and syringe food down. Litterbox output (urine & poo) started again yesterday (thankfully).

Any ideas?

Looks like some sort of infection is present (neutrophils increased; lymphocytes decreased).
And maybe LOW thyroid function; this can happen with illness in humans, so may be a similar process in cats.

thank you for your reply & taking a look , she actually showed interest in food today :) I do hope it's only an infection - she is on day 3 of 2 antibiotics & they are kicking in!

thank you, agreed! I am prayerful and hopeful. I really think this was an infection and now that antibiotics have kicked in .... *anti jinx* she is really doing A LOT better, not eating on her own, but interest is there & she is acting like Baby again ... when things looked bad, the next step was an ultrasound .. I do not think that is needed just yet .. now that she is improving. Looking for feedback though..
Normally had one bowel movement a day & now today she has had (4) HEALTHY bowel movements .. today alone!! & I mean healthy.. not liquid, not too big, just right.

I just wanted to say that's a beautiful photo of Baby for your avatar. Gorgeous kitty.
Hopefully it was a constipation thing and Baby will continue to eat now.
With some kitties, it doesn't take much to cause inappetence. For instance, my other kitty, Anabelle went a day or two days not eating, just didn't want it, acting like she wasn't feeling well. Well, I was ready to take her to the vet, and lo and behold we found out the problem. She had a small cyst on her chin (she has a patch of black fur on her chin so I didn't notice it), I happened to touch her chin, felt the bump and it busted open and started bleeding. I cleaned it up, and she felt great after that. The cyst must of been sore enough that it bothered her to eat. I guess my point is, you just never know.....
Keep us posted on your little Baby.

(((Thank you))) Critter mom and Katies mom!!! & all of YOU!!!

Good morning, thank you for your kind words! Baby continues to improve:
  • has eaten on her own, but still assist feeding (she fed herself at 06:00 ... 2 different kinds of food)
  • has had so many bowel movements it is CrAzY, (she only has 1 a day and she has had about 7 now) - all healthy - nothing liquid or weird. I find this interesting - almost like she may have been constipated? Will have to research.
  • now moving around her home like she owns it
  • No Bupe or Appetite stimulant on board for a few days now.
  • Just to be safe, I will come home on lunch to feed and continue this plan of care until she shows me she can do her caloric intake on her own.

Thank you again ... for everything.

they often won't eat a food they have thrown up..... (just like us)

be sure and switch her food around....

and usually they won't want to eat a food you syringe feed to them either.....

I didn't see any one mention that.
Sure hope she keeps improving....

She is now showing signs of constipation, I forget the dose for Miralax.. any suggestions?

**never mind, I show in BJM's shared article - 1/8 teaspoon total daily.
