Hello all, I will be heading to London Sunday for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, opening on 29th August. I've attached a url from the weekly news at the university where I teach about what I'll be doing in London. There are a couple of links in the article to explain more about the sport of wheelchair rugby and how to follow the Paralympic Games online and what little bits will be televised in the US.

This so exciting! I can't wait to hear more about your adventures in London. Have a great trip over on Sunday. Wheelchair rugby... I can't even imagine how much fun that must be for the participants since "wheelchair and rugby" are not words you normally hear in the same sentence!

All my best!

Anne, thanks on the link, and have a great trip on Sunday. So amazing and can't wait to see some of it on NBC.

Re: Loose Lips - Anne leaving Sunday for London Paralympic G

This sounds great Anne! Greg and I both work with children who have exceptionalities and spend a significant amount of time teaching other teachers to focus on our student's abilities rather than disabilties. I am very impressed by your initiative and I hope you have a wonderful time:)

That's really interesting! How proud you must be to be one of only 40 who is qualified to do this!
That's so exciting to be able to introduce it o the students when you get back. I'm sure it will do so much good.

Have a great time!

What a great experience! I got to attend a number of paralympic events at the Vancouver 2010 winter Paralympics and it was a joy to see the athletes. I remember one moment when an American cross country skier came over to greet his family after crossing the finish line. He was a veteran and there were tears of joy in everyone's eyes to see what he had accomplished. They were standing beside me and it was amazing to see. I know you'll have a great time.

Re: Loose Lips - Anne leaving Sunday for London Paralympic G

Thanks Wendy! Liz and I were at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Games for about 5 days. We attended the opening ceremony, several days of curling and sledge hockey and one day in Whistler at Nordic skiing. We loved the smurfs! I will miss the Vancouver volunteers in London in their jolly blue uniforms. The poor London volunteers are wearing a combination of purple and red uniforms or magenta and pink - ouch!

Re: Loose Lips - Anne leaving Sunday for London Paralympic G

I was at the opening ceremony, gold medal sledge hockey, women's downhill (the multiple gold medal winner works for a friend of mine), and several cross country events. My volunteer shift was the evening so I managed to get to several events during the day. I must say I enjoyed being a volunteer more for the Paralympics than the Olympics. The stories of the athletes and the more friendly atmosphere made it for me.

Re: Loose Lips - Anne leaving Sunday for London Paralympic G

Wow Wendy, what a great experience! And those of us with the Paralympics hear that often from the volunteers and those working both games. The Paralympics is an amazing sporting movement and I am really lucky to be involved with the games and the athletes! The power of sport to change lives is part of the magic.

Re: Loose Lips - Anne leaving Sunday for London Paralympic G

This was one of my favorite moments from working the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. I somehow managed to talk one of the Chinese Mascots workers into letting me try on the head. I was asking to put on the whole suit, but I think they were afraid they would get in trouble if they let me do that. It was such a blast!

And this is what I looked like after several days without enough sleep!

That is awesome, Anne, and very inspiring. A former colleague of mine from Illinois will be in London with her husband (J. Berenyi) who will be competing in the paralympic cycling event. He's one to watch so check him out if you're there at the same time.

Really great thing you're doing. Enjoy your time in London.
