Looking to Move Brody from Lantus to Levemir

Hello,

I am considering moving Brody from Lantus to Levemir due to supply issues and wanted to see what the transition is like for those who have done it in the past.

How closely do the doses correlate? Is the behavior the same?

He has been a bit high lately, I haven't been updating his sheet but normally he is decent with his numbers.

I appreciate any information.
Thanks.

What sort of supply issues are you having with the Lantus? Just curious, hadn’t heard of that before. When people switch from Lantus to Levemir, we suggest switching at 70% of the Lantus dose. Some cats have a strong reaction to the change, so it’s for safety doing the reduction. You may or may not have to go up to the old Lantus dose. Each cat is different.

The Levemir onset is typically +4 and nadir +8, so later than Lantus. You may have to adjust your testing schedule, and get used tomshooting lower numbers if you aren’t already. Can’t help much more than that without a spreadsheet. But I can say I was glad I switched.

Lou's been on three different insulins: Vetsulin, Basaglar, and recently Levemir. While we're only a little over a month in on Levemir, I am so glad we switched. It seems like he feels better on it than any other insulin before, so I count that as a win. Lou's an IAA kitty, so we've been steadily increasing in dose to overcome those antibodies, but his numbers were beautifully steady right after the switch (they even stayed steady when they were higher). So honestly, I'm beyond happy I switched. I'm excited to see how he'll do once we fine the right dose!

Well the main reason I am looking to switch is the main place I would get the Lantus is not currently an option.

I don't know what the deal is with his numbers is right now though. It will seem like he is getting really low during the day when i am at work I guess then rebound really high when I am at home. When I lower the dose however, he never comes down so I have to increase it again. He has been a diabetic since 2015 so when I adjust his dose it is only in .25 unit increments and I try to hold it for at least 5 days but still no luck.
