We are new to having the responsibility of a diabetic cat. We caught the disease very early, and while she currently only needs one unit/twice daily, we are struggling with the enormity of it all.

We used to live a very free lifestyle, going away on weekends etc. Now we find ourselves lost. We don't want to impose on those friends who used to come to feed/scoop to now give insulin shots, nor do we want to board her (being in a cage for 2 days just seems so cruel).

Does anyone know of someone in the Longbranch area of Toronto who can help us out? Particularly over the holiday season? (not Christmas or Boxing days).

Thanks!!!

Welcome to FDMB!

I too faced a dilemma of what to do about Hank because we go out to our campsite on the weekends from April 1-November 1st. Soooo we took Hank camping too!! :-D

I don't know if that's an option with you or not but it worked with us. I didn't have to worry about someone else giving injections that way.

Hopefully, someone will respond to this that lives close by or knows of someone that can take care of a diabetic kitty.

Much luck to you.

If you have any more questions, just ask. We've been where you are.

You could also check with your vet's office to see if one of the techs would come take care of her while you are out of town. Then she would still be comfortable in her own home.

Unfortunately we can't take her with us (other cats on site), but I am checking with my Vet to see if any technicians live in my area and might be willing.

I live in Toronto, Ontario - near the lake in South Etobicoke.

change the subject of your post to include the words toronto canada -- because there is a longbranch nj and i initially thought that was where you were located.

also post on the community page and lantus forum - as there are several canadian members and one of them just may be local enough to you,

Hi S,

I am close by in Etobicoke and have just recently had one of my fur babies diagnosed with Diabetes. While I am stilll new to this situation, I am a retired R.N. so the injections are a breeze but food monitoring and doing BG tracking are still new territory for me. I am waiting for the delivery of the Alpha Trak so I can start charting my girl's levels. I too have wondered what I will do if I want to go away for a few days or even an weekend. If you have found someone to deal with these situations I would love to get some info from you. Alternately, perhaps we can be of assistance to each other. Hoping you are still accessing the forum........

Hi Linda @MrWorfMen's Mom (and welcome to FDMB!),
It doesn't look like @ssauro has been on the forum since December, but you could try sending him/her a message and s/he may get email notification of that.
If you click on ssauro's user name, just below the profile pic (no actual pic added yet, there's just a question mark at the moment), you'll be given the option to 'start a conversation'.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the welcome and the tip. I will try that. I am so grateful I found this forum. You folks have a wealth of insight and information. I have learned more from reading the posts here over the past few days than I did from the 2 vets involved in my girl's care and I think the world of both of those vets! Nothing like hands on experience to learn from!
P.S. Bertie is a beautiful kitty. Looks a lot like my sugar baby, Menace.

Linda

Thanks Critter Mom. Menace is sugar in more ways than I can count! I am so happy for you and Saoirse that insulin is no longer needed and after a relatively short period of time although I'm sure it didn't seem short to either one of you! It's very encouraging for me as some of the history of our kitties are similar. Fingers crossed! You have another gorgeous black beauty there! Got to find a good pic of Menace but first I must answer the call for her daily beauty treatment aka brushies.
