Hello again :)

I'm researching options for changing Melty's diet.

Any Canucks on here have recommendations for a wet food brand?
I need to have dry on hand to put into a timed feeder (as I am at work all day and I want him to have the option to eat about an hour before he hits his lowest BG.) and I have heard/read good things about Wellness Core? Has anyone else tried this food?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. :)
 
You can use wet low carb with your feeder. I freeze mine into "pucks". One can of Fancy Feast fits into a cupcake pan Section. My cupcake pan is silicon so they pop out easily after freezing. Then I store them in a plastic bag in the freezer. It usually takes about 4 hours in cool weather to thaw and then continues to be fine for a couple hours more.

Thanks so much for the reply. I never even considered the possibility of freezing it. I feel foolish.

I usually give Melty his morning shot at 7:30, but don't have to leave for work until about 8:15. If I fill with frozen at 8:00, it would be okay by about 1:00? I'm worried with the heat about giving him bad food, is all.
 
Oh, don't feel foolish. It's not my idea; someone suggested it to me long ago. I would think it would be okay as long as it isn't hot or buggy. We leave ours in overnight and Niko does fine. If you're worried, freeze the contents of a can and then let it thaw and see how long it takes.
 
I will definitely be buying a few cans tonight and doing this with one to see how long it takes to thaw.

I'm really at a loss at what is important in a wet food.
Some of the things that I've read to look for aren't on the Guaranteed Analysis on Canadian brands.
What do you feed Niko? :)

If you need to leave out several timed meals, you could make the early ones unfrozen food and pop a couple of ice cubes on top of them to keep them cool and moist and leave frozen portions out for the later meals. That way you wouldn't have to worry so much about whether the frozen portions would have enough time to thaw out.
 
Cecil started out on Core and did fine with it. The richness just got too much for him I think (and he was gaining weight so fast he shot right past where he needed to be!) so we switched him to just the basic Wellness Chicken. Core is pretty high fat/high calorie so you need to watch your portions if you have a cat that you don't want to gain weight.

We put wet food in the timed feeders without bothering to freeze. The feeders cover it and keep it from drying out though we do add water to help the cats feel fuller 'cause they are all getting chubby and could eat less now.

What's the water/food ratio that you use in the feeder? Would freezing the food negate the need for water?

I will definitely keep an eye on his weight to make sure he isn't gaining too much on the Wellness Core. He's not a very small cat but doesn't seem to have the ravenous appetite that he did when he was younger. Nevertheless I shall heed your warning and switch if I start to notice weight gain.

I just make it a little soupy, I don't really have a ratio. Probably about 1 tbsp of water to 1/6 of a can the size Core comes in. I think a lot of people who freeze add water too, you'll probably just have to experiment a little on what Melty will accept. Some of my cats won't touch cold food, some won't touch watered down food. Some don't want to eat it unless it is watered down. ChrisFarley only requires we get the lid off the can. Cecil used to try to stick his head down the drain and lick it out of the garbage disposal and anything else he might find in there. Melty will likely tell you how he wants you to do it ;)
