Hi,

I have a recent post (Title: I need help with everything) talking about my frustration with my vet over my very sick kitty.

She is 16 and health wise has been feeling more and more crappy over the past few weeks. I’ve taken her to the vet, vet number 2, multiple times and each time I was brushed off. I was told to “stop looking for problems” The issue was she was slowly eating less, pooping less and her stomach was getting bigger. Along with that her sugar was through the roof! All he kept saying was she was fat and needed to lose weight.

I had her in to see him multiple times and couldn’t get any relief for her, the vet refused to give her any meds of any type. I finally felt lumps on her very swollen belly and demanded something be done. I was told they don’t do ultrasounds but can X-ray her, which was done yesterday. I got the results back today saying it looked like she has either an infection in her peritoneum or cancer but couldn’t really tell without an ultrasound! Now he is saying she needs an ultrasound, which apparently they DO, do there and it is almost $700. I just spent $500 for an X-ray and almost $1000 on blood tests and vet visits prior. If I had a million dollars I’d do every test available but I don’t do the $700 ultrasound is prohibitive now. I wish I knew this yesterday before I did the X-ray, I would have just paid a few hundred more and done the ultrasound! But I’m getting off topic.

He offered me clavaceptin (sp?) for her potential infection and I had to ask for anti inflammatories on top of that, but this is a crap shoot as he doesn’t seem to know if it is is an infection or cancer. Does anyone have any advice, information, insight on Peritoneal infections? Is that FIPS? Because other than laying on our back porch she is a fully indoor cat.

She did have a uti about a month ago where she was peeing everywhere and mucus was in the urine. She was given meds over the phone as I had covid and wasn’t allowed to bring her in.

Sorry if this is a scattered post, I’m losing my mind right now! After weeks of saying she is sick and being brushed off, now I find out she is potentially dying of cancer or some crazy infection.

Any advice or help is appreciated! Thank you!!

I don't see any tests on your spreadsheet?

I’m sorry you’re going through this - I totally relate. I have been going through the same thing with my cat for over a month - I think we are on our 5th ultrasound. Finally, gaining weight. What really helped us was B-12. Diabetic cats can be low on B-12 and it really messes them up. There is a test called TAMU that gives B-12 numbers. We are doing a weekly injections at home. My cat was also on Clavamox for 3 weeks to deal with infection.

Fingers and paws crossed for you both. ❤️

Thank you! It is the most stressful thing.

I just started her on B-12 shots, I’m hoping it gives some relief.

I am so sorry you and Twig are going through this. You vet sounds incompetent and downright awful and no help at all.
Is there another vet you can go to?

Is she eating much at all?
I would tell the vet she is vomiting every day so you can get some cerenia or ondansetron. I think that vet needs reporting.
It is not good for a diabetic cat to have a potential infection and not eating.

Are you testing for ketones in the urine. It is important you do with the poor appetite and the potential infection. I would make sure to give her the antibiotics and try and get her to eat ass much as you can.

Do you have anything written on your spreadsheet? I can’t see any data on it at all.

She is eaten by very little now but keystones seem to be okay for the moment. I had her on Hound and Gatos food for ever but she refuses it now so I switched to Fancy Feast. She would never eat it before but seems to be loving it right now. It takes me a full day of multiple small feedings to get a can, to a can and a half, into her. Her numbers hover in around 9-18, which is such a range. I think it is because I’m just feeding her as much as possible as often as possible that it’s screwing with her numbers. Tbh I’d rather she eats right now so the number fluctuating is dealable for the moment. This summer has been rife with personal tragedy and stress, I have to admit even though I have her numbers at home getting them posted has slipped my mind.

I’ve asked my so many times for Cerenia, he seems so dead set against it , it’s making me crazy. I’d still like to have it for her since it does offer some anti inflammatory and pain help. I’ll ask if she can take it on the Clavaceptin then just push for that.

I’m looking for another vet. This one was recommended to me and did so well by my friends cat. Her cat had clear issues though, so I don’t know if Twig is more complicated for him or what? My friend is even shocked at the response from him.

Is a potential perineal infection the same as FIPS? I just don’t see how she could have it being an indoor cat.

At this point I would feed her what ever she will eat. Eating is more important than what she eats if you are having trouble getting her to eat. Try and get the BG numbers into the SS so we can see the data if you can please.
Keep looking for a new vet.
I don’t know anything about FIPS. Hopefully one of the others will

I see I’ve written perineal I meant peritoneal.
