...for Vincent, my part-siamese baby who was diagnosed with feline diabetes last week. The vet prescribed Hill's Science Diet M/D, but one of the first ingredients on the label is pork by-product!
I want to substitute Blue Buffalo's Wilderness cat food, made with 95% meat and no grains. As it has very low carbohydrate content, would it be suitable for my diabetic cat?

All the nutrition info you need is on Dr. Lisa's web site http://www.catinfo.org :thumbup

Then use the canned food charts to find low carb foods: http://binkyspage.tripod.com/canfood.html There's a couple varieties listed on the "new chart". The Wilderness line isn't on either chart. The Wilderness ones contain potato which may raise bgs in some carb-sensitive cats. It wouldn't hurt to try the food and test bgs (are you hometesting?) to see if the food raises bgs or not.

If you are giving insulin and you change the food, you may change the insulin requirements.

You need to be home testing to make sure you've got the diabetes controlled well and that you don't give insulin when the blood glucose is already low. Doing so could kill your cat.

Many of us use a ReliOn glucometer from WalMart, as the supplies are relatively inexpensive and WalMart is open 24 hours in many (most? all?) places.
