I am new to this.
I was diagnosed in Sept. This is a real hassel for me and my dad.
I know he wants me to get better, But I figure I have lived a funfilled 14 years.
I have become super picky when it comes to eating and want to know what is the best wet to eat. I do love my dry treats and so does my two sisters.
Dad has had me on a shot a-day, and checks my blood daily with the reli-on by walmart. It has been steady at 85-125 but most recently dropped to 35-50. Doc said to stop the shots and continue blood monitoring. Report this to him on Saturday, Well needless to say I am running at 45 today. What do you suppose I should do? Ant help for my Dad would be much apurrrrreciated.
Thanks

Re: Lookiung for advice for my Dad

Hi there

it would be good for others to know what insulin you've been on and how much you've been dosing/last dose
Diet: what are you feeding for meals?

Treats: see this link for low carb treats viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9172

Good to hear you're home testing!!

Hey Charlie,

Tell you Dad your numbers are good. Probably be a good idea to stop the insulin but keep poking your ears (sorry about that!) Wet lo carb food is best and you can find lots of varieties on these charts to try: http://www.binkyspage.tripod.com/canfood.html Just have Dad stay between 8 -1 0% carbs so you can avoid future shots. Also there are lots of great lo carb treats - my kitties like the freeze dried salmon and bonito flakes and over even just a boiled piece of chicken.

agree. with numbers like that i'd stop the insulin too and monitor for a couple days and see if the numbers go back up to diabetic numbers.

second, as far as food goes and quantity consumed, what are you feeding now? prescription food? store food? there's several foods you can buy at the stores that are wet and low carb (Friskies, Fancy Feast, 9Lives, etc....have several flavors for instance)

where do you live? is it warm there yet? i've noticed a dramatic drop off in amount consumed around my house in the last week or so because we're coming into our warm weather and the cats just naturally don't eat as much when it gets hot

Hey Charlie,

The good news to tell your dad, is, if you are not receiving insulin - then you cannot get into a hypo situation. So no need to feed you dry food or high carb or karo syrup or anything like that.

If your numbers stay below 130 consistently for 14 days, then you can officially be considered OTJ - meaning no more shots for you, Sorry but dad will still need to poke your ears, just to make sure you're doing good. But he won't have to poke as often, like once a day after the 14 days, then once a week, every two weeks, once a month, you get the idea. Make sure to demand a treat after the pokies. My meowme gives me brushes and I love them!

As for food - any low carb (10% or less) canned food will work (per Binky's chart).

If you need ideas on what to eat. here are some of the foods I've eaten. Oh and now my meowme makes me homemade raw, which is really yummy!

$ less expensive

Fancy Feast - the classic flavors - only pate style - like turkey & giblets feast, beef feast, chicken feast, chicken & beef feast. And if you have Walmart nearby - they are selling it for 30 cents a can!

Friskies - again only pate style - no gravies

More expensive

Wellness, EVO 95%, Nature's Logic

I didn't mention fish flavors as you want to limit that to once a week or less for several reasons -

- mercury and other contaminants in the fish
- high in phosphorous - can be problem for kidneys
- you'll get a taste for only fish flavors and if you ever have an eating problem this could be difficult to get you to eat something other than fish

Good luck Charlie and hope to see you at the Falls!

Signed, Maui The Magnificent

Thanks so much for the responses. I think my dad feels better.
I just had some breakfast and waiting to get poked. He is having his coffee right now and doing something on that machine in the den. All I see is his fingers moving around on the desk!
So you think that the numbers are good? No more shots! MEOW GROOVY! I will make sure he pokes me to monitor but the idea of no more shots really excites me.

Ok here we go, time for the pokie
I will let you know

Allright! My number is at 55! This makes me so very happy! I feel like running outside
and chasing some butterflys and birds. Dad seems happy too.
Funny thing, My sistes, Olivia and Ella, both come into the den where I get poked, watching so hesitently
till its done. When dad says "YEAH" they all wait for me and we play. They are the best sisters an older brother could have.
So again thanks for the advice.
We will keep you posted

Should he get poked before eating a meal, or at the low numbers it doesn't matter before or after???

Thanks Jan

Hey all
Doctor was ever so happy to hear the number. Im off shots for the next 3 days! Way too GROOOOOOOVEY!
Dad does not know what to do with himself. I wish he would go out and have some fun!

Doc thinks that the best time time to check is 45 mins after breakfast! Do you agree?

Im super happy happy now, running around, playing with OLIVIA and ELLA, looking for the geicos in the yard.

You Know, Life is good............. It really is. Love you all and especially my sisters and dad

I will keep you posted

Hi Charlie;

Testing BGL prior to meals will give the truest sense of what your actual sugar level is.
When we humans have to go in for our physicals, the doctor always wants us to have nothing but plain,
clear fluids for at least 8 hours, (sometimes 12 hours!!), prior to the blood tests.
It is called a "fasting bgl test" and it is the best way to see if you are really going to need an insulin injection.

Hey All
Well im running at 40-56 and I feel great!
Doc thinks that my dad can stop giving me shots. Im so supery happy.
I have so much more energy now that Im eating Fancy Feast classic. I LOVE this food.
Thanks to you all my dad has such a better understanding of this very confusing disease.

MEOW OUT

Charliepants and Dad

Well that really is good news Charlie pants! welcome to the Falls and being OTJ!

Now tell your dad, that he will need to keep testing you, not as often as before, but like once a week, every two weeks, once a month, etc. just to be sure you stay OTJ.

Its been some time since my dad got on, but it looks as though Im heading down hill. Im not sure what to expect but I do know
that my time is drawing nearer. Im eating four cans of wet food a day, My weight has dropped considerably and I have diarrehha
really bad. Im laying around pretty much all day except to eat and go to the bathroom. My sisters Ella and Olivia are being
so kind to me and I know they know somethings up. Are these symptoms all common on the way to decline?

What have your blood sugars readings been? FortiFlora can help you with the diarrhea. I hope you feel better soon.

Ok please give an update - how are the blood sugar readings? Has there been any change in diet? He isnt on the insulin any more right?

Severe diarrhea may have many causes. Here are some possibilities to discuss with the vet who would run diagnostic tests to rule in or out these conditions.

Hyperthyroidism may involve weight loss and hypermotility of the colon resulting in diarrhea. A throid suppressing medication called methimazole may be applied as a gel to the ear, or given as a small tablet.

Given that the pancreas was affected previously, it could be exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) where the pancreas doesn't provide enough of the digestive enzymes. That could be treated with digestive enzymes.

A common co-occurring condition is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The lining of the intestines is inflammed and has difficulty digesting and absorbing food. This may be treated with steroids and sometimes with diet changes. If steroids are used, insulin may need to be resumed.

Sometimes, IBD evolves into GI lymphoma. Palliative treatment to keep the cat comfortable may include steroids.
