I'm having trouble dosing- she gets too low, I skip, then high, then skip. .75u has been advised for me, but I'm having trouble measuring low doses. The drop method didn't work for me, I've had a call into the vet to get an Rx for Relio .5u marked syringes, but probably won't hear until Monday, so stuck with 1u syringes. I'm about to try a standing magnifier that just walked in the door :-)

The best you can do is just try to keep it consistent....so wherever you decide .75 is on your syringes, should always be as close to identical as possible.

You might want to use an old syringe and draw up some kind of colored water (tea, cola, juice) and decide where .75 is going to be and then keep that around to compare new shots to

Thnks - good idea. I'm practicing on a syringe with red dye right now. If they make all this money on Alpha Traks, test strips for animals, why aren't there syringes with a narrower bore, or more dilute insulin? I wonder, can you trust a compounding Pharmacy to make dilute lentos (if that's even possible). So I'm trying for .75

My husband has to give the shots about half the time, due to my crazy schedule. There is no way he can approximate what I'm doing, he does not have the vision. I know it is bad to refill syringes, but it's that or undershoot. I would need to prefill 12 hrs in advance, some days longer.

Comments?

It isn't good to prefill syringes with lantus.notice where the top of the plunger is in relation to the black lines on the syringe markings. If you pay attention to where the plunger line is, it will be easier to duplicate the dose again. Hopefully that magnifier is going to help you guys. There is a link or an explanation on the "taking care of your insulin" sticky that explains why prefilling the syringes doesn't work. it might be in the " new to the group" sticky. I'll go look and get back to you.

I would go to. 75 units and do your best to measure that. Show your husband exactly where you're putting the plunger when you measure that amount out, and see if he can duplicate it also.

It's in the New to the Group sticky. I can't figure out how to copy links on my phone or I'd just get it for you.

If you can't find it, say so and I'll swipe the laptop from my husband.

Thanks Julie, I was afraid of that, I glanced at that post. I can do it, but I honestly don't think he can physically do it, his close vision isn't good. Maybe the .5 syringes will help, but I'm betting on Tuesday before I get them. I'm putting the tip of the plunger just over the unit line. I'll talk to him tomorrow, I think he feels I'm obsessing now, which yes I am, but I figure once it's going right, things will get smoother.

Make sure you get the 3/10 cc 0.5U marked syringes.

I remember when the shelter sent me home with 1cc syringes, 2u markings on the barrel and we were trying to measure 1.5U. Impossible to maintain any sort of consistency in the dosage.

do you mean you're putting it just under the unit line, so it's smaller than 1 unit?

it can be really hard for some people. I sympathize. Maybe if he tries doubling up reading glasses, like stacking one pair of reading glasses on top of another pair that might help him.

By the way, didn't you get a test last night after you didn't shoot? I'm handicapped when I'm trying to look at the board on this phone, but I was thinking that it was you that got a test last night after you didn't shoot. If so, would you put that in your spreadsheet please? If I'm remembering wrong, then ignore me, lol.

Yes- under the line, smaller than 1u-- hopefully .75u. Looking at the syringe, moving the plunger up I was thinking "above the line" . Julie- good catch, yes the reading was 97. Also, I made a big mistake- I didn't get the PMPS!! I can't believe I did that. I got the 10 and the 11, then was practicing with the syringe, my husband came in with the standing magnifier, and I forgot to test.

BTW Lolly was doing great today- she cleaned herself, luxuriated in bed with me... and a first for a while, she batted at the birdie along with the rest of the cats. (not as energetically, but hopefully she's getting there)

I think it already is going right. She's making amazing progress. And you may not have have reference for this, but considering you skipped last night, that 204AT is not at all high....that equates to roughly 133 on human meter, a low blue, even having skipped. I'm with everyone on dropping back so you can shoot comfortably every 12 hours. Chris is right, its more important that you get YOUR .75 about the same each time, than having it be exact. Tuesday is not so far off ....you only have a couple days to fudge with what you have. You saw the photos in the sticky Julie mentioned? Martha, Lolly's looking great....she's basically in all blues and greens (at human meter #s) ...you can't ask for going more right than that.
I think thank goodness 1/2u syringes are on their way, and magnifying glasses, as it looks like fractions are in your near future. Just wait to see how much fun micro dosing is!!

I just glanced at her SS...it's gorgeous!! Again last night and today, she continues having practically perfect numbers...you should be SO HAPPY with this. She is responding so beautifully.

Just wanted to pop in and say hello! You had a heck of a trial by fire, but Lolly's looking phenomenal. Like Marje, we use calipers to dose. Basically, we decided how many millimeters looked to be about 1u, and then just did the math from there, and ignored the markings on the syringe and measured just by the calipers. Different brands of syringes are different in how many millimeters is the equivalent of 1u, but for us, we thought 1.6mm looked about right (and easier math ;)). So, for example, a quarter unit is 1/4 (x) 1.6mm or 0.4mm. We also use a mounted magnifier to actually see those smaller doses, which helps immensely. My DH is kind of a "tools" guy, so he took to the calipers immediately. :) Maybe your DH would also take to using calipers and a magnifier?

You may also want to consider an OptiVISOR. You can get them in several different magnifications and even an additional loupe to increase the power. You can order through Amazon, but the mfg. page gives better info. It leaves hands free for adjusting the dose. I use it as well as the calipers. For the micro doses the lines on the syringes just aren't consistent.
