Lola won’t eat after major dental extraction

Lola had to have most of her teeth removed by a new vet, as they were really really bad. She had that done today and is recovering sort of okay, but she won’t eat, I assume because of pain. I’ve given her more painkillers and will try again in an hour, but I’m freaking out a little.

She hadn’t had any insulin today - the vet checked her sugar before surgery and decided not to dose because she hadn’t eaten (of course). I can’t give her insulin tonight on an empty stomach, so I’m at a bit of a rock and a hard place.

How concerned should I be? What can I do to coax her to eat? I don’t want her to go without insulin for too long... :(

How many extractions did she have? What pain medication is she on? It can be normal for cats to not have an appetite the evening of a dental; the anesthesia causes loss of appetite and it's usually still somewhat in their system for the first 24 hours or so after dental (sometimes longer if they're a senior).

13 extractions, she’s had a buprenorphine shot, and I’m giving her oral buprenorphine every 12 hours, along with an antibiotic (clindamycin). She’s also got an antiseptic oral rinse (chlorhexidine), but I’m holding off until tomorrow for that in case her mouth is really sore tonight.

I didn’t realize anesthesia causes loss of appetite, but I do know it can stick around in kitty for quite a while, so that makes sense. I’m going to get a few hours of sleep and try again first thing in the morning.

Poor baby. Water it down so she just had to lick it.

If she likes tuna juice try that

Hmm good idea, I will try this!

Churu Lickable Treats were pretty much the only thing George wanted to eat the first day or two after her dental recently. Sometimes putting one on top of canned food would encourage her enough to eat some of the canned food too. And I second the suggestion to water down the pate.

If she's still not hungry tomorrow, I would let your vet know. Sometimes cats need some extra help getting rid of the anesthesia, usually it's just fluid therapy to help them flush it out faster.
