I'm looking opinions on a couple of types of litter. We currently use Feline Pine but I 'm curious what others think of the wheat and corn varieties.

I've read some reviews where people complain that they can attract bugs. Any truth to that?

Thanks

I've recently started using 'Worlds Best Cat litter'.. seriously, that's what it's called! it's corn based i believe.

I can honestly say they are not understating in their advertising! its' AMAZING! I have five cats in the house.. three litter trays on various levels, all well used.. and the pee DOES NOT SMELL! seriously. the stuff cleans up fast, clumps fast but not into hard hard lumps.... way more absorbent, and doesn't seem to stick to the cats and get tracked thru the house. The stuff isn't cheap, I got a 'freebie' bag to try one time and was hooked! Although not cheap, it lasts WAY longer. I don't have to clean the trays every day, and seriously, you just don't smell the cat pee at all.

this stuff: http://www.worldsbestcatlitter.com/

your mileage may vary, but I just love the stuff.

I love the old clumping Feline Pine (the husband didn't because it tracks EVERYWHERE). But it doesn't smell at all and the girls seem to like it.
Feline Pine recently changed the clumping to be a lot closer to the "Original" variety...its basically the pellets chopped up a little smaller. Its not cheap either (I think the cheapest I've found locally is about $13 for a big box). Calling this "new & improved" clumping or improved are both big lies, in my opinion.

The summer in StL gets so humid, that's when I worry about the bugs.

hm, re the bugs... I can't give any advice. our house always very cool and the trays cleaned pretty regularly. I do notice in the bags of 'used litter' outside, they can smell a little mouldy after a while and I imagine they'd attract bugs, but not sure any more than regular smelly litter??? who knows!? And $13 a bag for your pine is nothing! this stuff I get is around $28 for the smaller bag! it comes in multi cat household, and one cat household forumlae... but not sure what on earth the difference could be? Still love it though, won't go back to 'regular' stuff.

I use the Purina Breeze and I love it:

The smart cat box is the same concept, but uses safflower seeds instead of clay desiccating pellets : http://www.felinediabetes.com/SCB/SCBindex.html

Hardly any waste, no dust, and super easy to clean. The only thing is that this is not a box you want to use if your cat has runny poo a lot. If it happens infrequently, the annoyance of cleaning up runny poo is completely worth the ease of use the rest of the time, but I would switch to something else if it was a chronic problem.

I agree, not a big fan of the changes Feline Pine made to the clumping formula. It's like half ground up instead of sawdusty. I have also used "WBCL" and it's great. You can find it on sale often, but otherwise it costs a little more than FP. A bag lasts a long time (I have 4 boxes and two kitties). I just bought a bag of Arm and Hammer Essentials clumping and it is "100% corn fibers" but I have not opened it yet. I tried a wheat type once, but I must not have been too impressed with it because I didn't buy it again. I think it was called "Swheat Scoop".

I live in the sub-tropics off the SC coast, and we have all sorts of bugs, but I have not seen any in or around the LB's whether I use FP or WBCL. Two of the boxes are on the screened porch, so if bugs were an issue, they'd show up there for sure.

Only one word of caution that I learned the hard way with one of my civies...if you are going to use either a wheat or corn based litter make sure your cat isn't super sensitive to grains...Onyx is highly sensitive to grains and if he so much as groomed himself when we were using both corn and wheat based litters he started trying to tear his face apart...so alas we are stuck with clumping clay litter. As much as I hate the weight of the boxes and the dust everywhere I perfer my cat to have skin and fur on his face.

I just use a no name brand uncscented clumping clay litter about 4" deep in a large storage container. It is low dust and low tracking, clumps well, easy to scoop twice a day.

IMHO clumping clay litter is really the best way to go. Yeah it's dusty, but so are corn/wheat based litters and those are far more likely to cause a reaction in your kitty than inert dust particles as Mel experienced. And as Dr Lisa explains on Catinfo it is the most sanitary litter because it clumps well and you can completely remove all urine/feces from it.

We switched to the Feline Pine because Ruby was obsessively grooming her legs & tummy. Once we switched away from the clay, that improved tremendously.

I do remember one bean who was alarmed with higher BG numbers after switching to WBCL (corn based). Apparently kitty was eating it. Carb addict for sure!

Eeek!

I also use WBCL and like it with my two. When Neko was first diagnosed and even when she is on way too little insulin, I have caught her snacking on a fresh litter box. Yuck! I topped it with a little fresh potting soil and that did the trick. I have a friend who uses Feline Pine and she commented on the recent changes. She is currently mixing 1/2 and 1/2 with WBCL. I have also tried Swheat Scoop but it didn't do a great job with the smell. Another important factor for me is how well it "clings" as with two long hair cats I want to limit how far around the house the litter spreads.

The shelter I volunteer at used to use a pine product (non clumping) and then switched to WBCL. Even though the litter is way more expensive up front, they have saved a lot of money because the amount they go through has gone way down. Even at the shelter they didn't feel the need to go to the multi cat product. It's just more expense.

My cats love Dr Elsey's. I tried a bunch of litters side by side, and found they would use a used Dr Elsey's box over a unused litterbox of WBCL, Tidy Cats, S'wheat Scoop (what I had been using), or several others. Dr Elsey's clumps great, and it's very low dust. It scoops so cleanly that you can get all the waste out with minimal effort (I use Litter Lifter scoops only -- love them!.) It tracks no worse than anything else, if no better. The big downside of Dr Elsey's is that it's not biodegradable.

It's great for retraining cats with litterbox problems. The rescue I work with has used it with 100% success in retraining, for example an orange tiger kitten I rescued that had never even been given a litterbox but rather was permitted to go where ever he wanted in the apartment. Regular litters failed to get the kitten to use the box all the time and his foster was constantly having to clean behind the tv console. I happened to see Kitten Attract and the bottle of attractant herbs at the Petsmart, and took it over for the foster to try. In short order the problem was permanently solved. :-D

To seal the deal, your first bag of Dr Elsey's is free. See coupon here. Periodically they have deals like $5 off per bag coupons too, with no bag limit.
