Devon asked this morning about a replacement food for her kitty Mocha who has been eating the Special Kitty brand from Walmart. I had never heard of this brand before and sure enough, my local Walmart does not carry it.

When looking up Special Kitty canned cat food online I found this weblink from Sun Valley Vet that has a list of low-carb canned cat foods. Any Special Kitty varieties that they consider low-carb are on this list.

While they consider low carb to be under 7%, I think it's a handy reference sheet for quickly finding food that are 4% or under. You don't have to wade through pages and pages of brands and flavors that are both MC AND HC.

I called the Sun Valley Vet just two minutes ago and I asked if the list is up-to-date. The tech told me that the vets recently collected the information and the list is not yet two years old, as of April 22, 2014.

Here is the list:

Tina --

There are several discrepancies between the list you have and Dr. Lisa's list. Do you happen to know if they did their calculations based on "as fed" values or the guaranteed analysis? The latter uses minimum or maximum values which aren't reliable.

Re: LIST OF LOW-CARB Canned Catfood ..Sun Valley Vet

I just called Sun Valley Vet again and have left a message. The vet who compiled the list is going to call me back.

I asked the tech to take a note-- I told her that I need to know if the list was from a "typical nutrient analysis" (this is what Dr. Lisa used), or if it was from a 'guaranteed analysis.'

I'll post as soon as know which one it is.

Re: LIST OF LOW-CARB Canned Catfood ..Sun Valley Vet

Dr. Lisa's list was compiled in 2010. These companies change their formulas often. I learned this when I helped Helen with her food list. She is redoing it but this time didn't want help. By the time it is finished it too might be obsolete. When the companies change labels they often change formulas.

And there are a lot of good LC foods that aren't on that list: Candidae, EVO, Nature's Variety, Weruva, to name a few. If the data is 2 years old that's older than Dr. Lisa's ( hers was made in 2012 not 2010) and I know that the Merrick is out of date on her list. I have a list culled from Dr. Lisa's of foods that are both LC and low Phos on a tab on Tess's SS.

Re: LIST OF LOW-CARB Canned Catfood ..Sun Valley Vet

I'm not sure where the year 2010 is coming from... The list from the Sun Valley Vet is not yet two years old. Dr. Lisa's list says it is from September 2012, so it is two years old.

What I do not know yet is if the Sun Valley Vet list is "as fed value" or "guaranteed analysis."

The list that I just posted doesn't have a lot of foods on it, that is true. I mainly liked it because it is a quick and easy list. I did not have to dig through 28 pages of MC and HC foods to find the foods that are LC.

I wish that someone would cull Dr. Lisa's most recent list and create their own list showing ONLY the LC foods from Dr. Lisa's list. :-D I only use Dr. Lisa's list right now and it's a mess. I hate having to take a book with me to the pet food store to figure out what kind of cat food I'm going to buy.

Re: LIST OF LOW-CARB Canned Catfood ..Sun Valley Vet

I agree, Tina. Dr. Lisa's list is a wonderful tool, but it would be nice if someone could create a version that was sortable by value, so if you wanted only the LC, you could move them to the top, or low Phos, etc. I'm not smart enough to do it. I've been playing with it, trying to take out the parts that are applicable to my cats, but so far I've failed miserably. I'm not giving up, though.

Thanks for your efforts!

Re: LIST OF LOW-CARB Canned Catfood ..Sun Valley Vet

I just wish fuds companies would make fuds that are only healthy and tasty and good for FD/CKD kitties and skip all the crap so we wouldn't need lists ;-) !!! I know...it's a big, unattainable request, ,though...

I'll be curious to hear what the vetty says....it is nice to have more than one reference, as long as the data is accurate. Thanks for investigating, Tina!

Re: LIST OF LOW-CARB Canned Catfood ..Sun Valley Vet

Amy, I often have the CNBC financial news channel on in the morning when I am cleaning my kitchen and they were doing a short interview with a man on the program who said that a NEW pet food company was coming onto the market that was going to make pet foods that deal specifically with certain pet diseases. They didn't say anything about what diseases they are, and did not even say the name of the pet food company.

I have my doubts about it though.. we all know about the overpriced products that most vet offices sell.. We don't need more of that.

I should do some research to find out more about this "new" company.

About 5 mega-conglomerates own all of the pet food labels in the world. You can read about that here:

The petfood industry
Globally, thousands of companies are involved in the petfood business; many are also active
in animal feed and/or pet care businesses. Nevertheless, a small group of multinational food
and consumer care companies do play a substantial role in global sales. And their role
continues to grow through acquisitions. Today, the world’s top players are mass petfood
marketers Mars, Nestlé and Purina; together they account for almost half the global market for
petfood.

I believe that the pet food "industry" cares more about making money than it does about keeping our beloved pets healthy.

Re: LIST OF LOW-CARB Canned Catfood ..Sun Valley Vet

Oops, I meant to write 2012 for Dr.Lisa. Unfortunately I tried to get Helen to include grain free of carbs but she won't because it is a CKD list. It is so hard to get the info from the manufacturers. Many reps don't know what DMA or as fed is. I will be shocked if Dr. Lisa updates because it is so time consuming. You would be surprised at how many companies refuse to give you the info. David Forman at Soulistic (Petco) who also makes Cats in the Kitchen and Werurva is quite helpful. He now includes the info on his site. He has some low carb ones but quite limited. He has lots of grain free.

Re: LIST OF LOW-CARB Canned Catfood ..Sun Valley Vet

I did it too and mentioned it in the post right before the two requests for it!

I also have Dr. Lisa's whole list in a SS that can be sorted but it's a little cumbersome to put on Google Docs. Anyone who wants it can PM me and I can email it. Let me know if you need Excel or Mac Numbers.
