FWIW, I did a web search for AlphaTrack products (10/15/2010)
At least 1 vendor I found requires a prescription from a vet; I've not listed them.
These 2 vendors did not appear to require a prescription from a vet.
I have no experience with either of them, nor affiliation to them.

Remember that any lancet system will work, so you don't have to use this ones. The meter, test strips, and control solution are designed to work with each other only.

And my vet was going to sell me a kit for $200 !!!

Hope this is helpful.

Wow
I still like my Maxima AST from www.hocks.com. it works very well.

Maxima AST meter kit $6.99 with lancet device

Maxima AST test strips $16.49 per 50ct

Invacare 29ga Lancets $1.49 per 100ct

For control solution, I like to use my own blood since I am not diabetic. The main criteria for control solution is that it be in "normal" blood sugar range.

If total order is over $79, the shipping is free, so I also buy syringes from hocks for $17.49 per 100ct (Monoject 31ga 3/10cc half-unit marks)

I love my Relion Confirm, I think the kit (including meter, lancet pen + 10 lancets) was about $12, test strips $20/50 strips. Walmart is open 24 hours. The Confirm (and the Micro) only needs 0.3mcl of blood, tiny sample, easy to use, accurate and reliable....save yourself a lot of money!! When you have to test often due to low numbers, you can go through a LOT of strips really quickly....

Peace of mind knowing my cat is safe.....priceless!

I'm thinking about the new Infinity available at Hocks as my backup meter, similar pricing as the Maxima.

I think if you spend $59 at Hocks, you can get free Priority Mail shipping....products have to be eligible, don't remember exact terms.

don't think you'll find too many folks here interested in alphatrack.
there was a rather long thread on it recently...actually a thread on diabetic treatment by vets' but the subject of alphatrack came up several times.
we do soooo much on every detail of our cats diabetes that the expense and incoveinence are not worth it for us. we don't actually need the best meter money can buy so much as a meter that is accurate...then our extra $$$ goes to seeing that no one here goes without a newbie kit that includes everything necessary to start testing.
we actually contribute $ to help cats here and diabetic cats that we find out about.
so you can see, all of us have found great ease and stability working with our less expensive easy to get human meters.
lori
and tomtom too!

Lori, can you please provide a link to the discussion you refer to?

quoting Venita

I am glad that Abbott has taken an interest in the cause of diabetic cats and dogs. However, I have no illusions that that interest is anything other than a business decision with a focus on the bottom line. There may indeed be a precision benefit to an animal calibrated meter; we had an extensive discussion about that here just within the past couple of weeks. Given that cost is a life-deciding factor for many diabetic cats, home monitoring is key to minimizing vet costs but, unfortunately, the AlphaTrak cannot at its present pricing be a part of a plan for "frugal feline diabetes."

Did you not recall this?
