Levemir discontinued -- any help!?

Hi all! I have not posted in this forum for quite a while as Blackberry has been doing wonderfully the last few years. He is on 1.5U of Levemir twice a day for about 5 years now. I just took him for his annual wellness exam and was notified that Levemir is discontinued. We have a vial that will last us til about June - i typically get a new one twice a year, June & December.

Has anyone run into this issue and successfully transitioned their kitty to a new insulin? I am so stressed out about this!!
 
thank you, ill take a look! I wasn't sure how long Levemir lasts so wasnt sure if it was something i could stock up on or not.
 
You can call Mark's and see what the expiry date is on the package of what they would be shipping.
 
Hi all! It's been a while since I was here. Minnie is still being her diva self. I have a question for the wise people here related to expiration dates.

I'm going up to Vancouver from Seattle and will visit Mark's Marine Pharmacy to pick up Levemir in person. It is really really being discontinued now and their stock expires Nov 2027. I'm getting through about 1 penfill a month with her highness (currently on 4.75u twice a day).

How many boxes of 5 pens should I get - is it still ok after the expiration date? Dr Google says it loses efficacy but as I'm testing anyway, I would just increase dose as needed...or doesn't it work like that? What insulin have others transitioned to, from levemir? She started on Lantus for the first year and that was the year of multiple DKAs. She likes Levemir so I'd prefer to keep her on it as long as safely possible. I don't actually need you to tell me how many to buy :) really just an idea of how long after Nov2027 would it be ok to use.

You could actually stop in almost any pharmacy in Vancouver to get Levemir, provided they have stock. Marks is nothing special up here. And way more expensive on line to Americans that what we pay here, You could call around a few other pharmacies and see what their Lev expiration dates are. I'd think that it'd lose efficacy to the point it would be like shooting water, but I don't know how long after. People switch to new pens/cartridges when insulin stops working as well.

I've seen some transition back to Lantus, another went to Tresiba - but we have little experience with it here. You might want to pop over to the Tresiba forum, read the posts and spreadsheets over there.
