How long does Levemir last if you keep it refrigerated?

I'm not sure if we are going back on it or not. Gus's numbers are terrible back on Lantus and we are unable to get him down. He has other things that are making him feel bad - intestinal inflammation - and I wonder if that is possibly why he felt bad some of the time on Levemir. We are going to a specialist on Monday.

I know Lantus can last for months, but I wasn't sure if Levemir can last as long or not?

Thank you for any advice.

Several of us have had lev last until its gone. For me, with Jeddie, that was 8 months or something. And I know of one person who used lev after the exp date and it was fine. I don't recommend that, just mentioning it as a way of indicating that lev is very stable and will last a long time when properly handled.

Well, I have always used pens -and yes, that is after opening , with refrigeration.

I don't know how long the vial will last, but I suspect it could be less time because of the air that is allowed into the vial (displaces the insulin as it is withdrawn by the syringes). Pens have a unique vacuum stopper that is drawn down with the insulin and prevents most air from entering the cartridge that holds the insulin. I did have one of those break once and there was a lot of air that got in. Insulin seemed fine though.

Thank you. I appreciate the additional info about the pens - which we haven't used yet but were considering if we ever decide which insulin we are going with.
