Levels still above 400

Moe has been on 1 unit twice a day since 5/23 when I started testing his blood instead of his urine. He was diagnosed on 5/10. His levels have been above 400 ever days since except three times, they were in the 300's. I called my vet and he said to check his levels mid day for a few days to see if we need to increase it to 2 units twice a day. Have checked mid-day for last two days and he is still above 400. He is on dry food as we've had stomach/small intestine issues. He was diagnosed with an ucler in his small intestine. This started way before his diabetic diagnosis. I'm thinking about switching him to wet after reading everything on this website. Maybe the dry food is the reason his levels are still high?? I'm afraid to switch food as this may irritate his ulcer again which means daily vomiting. Looking for help.

Hi Kathy,

What kind of insulin are you using? That info will help us give you better advice.

Yes, wet food can make a huge difference. When we switched Oliver from dry to wet, his numbers went down 100 points overnight. Have you seen this website by a vet? She has great ideas about FD diets and transitioning. Www.catinfo.org

He's on Lantus SoloStar. I have looked at that website as well. Not sure if I should stop dry food all together or mix the dry with the wet and slowly remove teh dry. I mixed it tonight to see if Moe would even eat it and he scarfed it down so he likes it.

Kathy it is amazing how high carb that dry stuff is.
For an example...my tom fell a little too quickly the other day...like 70 or 80 points in an hour and i had to leave for work.
i gave him a total of 2 beef flavor temptation treats. two!
and tested in an hour.
suffice it to say i could comfortably leave for work.

yes please do tell us which insulin you are using so we may be better able to help you.

Kathy, this is VERY IMPORTANT ok?
if you do switch foods you must test more often or drop dose immediatly.
your cat's numbers may go down dramatically and he could hypo.
so if your home...test test test.
your still using 1 unit right?
i would stick with it but expect to see a number drop.

If he is willing to change and doesn't have a tender stomach, you can make the switch. If you are worried about it, you can mix the wet and dry for a while.

If you switch overnight, be sure to be on top of the numbers so you can reduce the dose as needed.

Have you seen the Lantus forum? Everyone uses your insulin and can help you with dosing. The sticky topics at the top of the page have great info on how Lantus works in cats.

Got it. I'm going to test him here shortly to see how he's doing with giving him 1/2 dry & 1/2 wet for the first time. I'm not home during the day so maybe I should wait to switch his food until the weekend when I'll be home and can test him every couple of hours. My biggest fear is him going hypo. I have karo syrup handy though.

there are foods you should use before you hit the big gun karo. some high carb gravy food..maybe 18 carbs.
do you have the list or should i find it and link it for you?

I just reviewed the Lantus forum. Hadn't seen it yet. Lots of great information. Will have to review it more indepth later. I have found the food list. Haven't looked at the treats piece of it yet. I'll get those later this week.

good luck kathy,
and we are always still here for you on this side of the board...but introduce yourself to the lantus folks.
