Hi All, Jaspers levels seem to be going up and up, nothing has really changed, same routine, same food etc but noticed he was drinking a bit more than normal. He has been testing at 26 -28 morning and night the last few days where as before it was sitting higher at night and lower in the morning and I really don't know what is going on. He is still happy but has always been a lazy cat only moving to be fed lol so cant really tell if he is sleeping more or not. Anyone have any idea's? Thanks, Mel

Hi,

I don't think I have replied on your thread before. I went back to your earlier thread to access your spreadsheet. We need to help you attach it to your signature so it comes up each time you post, updated.

Your recent curve is great information and, unfortunately, completely typical of Canninsulin, with an early nadir and then a short cycle. Increasing the dose a little is a possibility (the nadir wasn't so low that going a little lower wouldn't hurt) but that may just add to the bounce he is probably getting and it is unlikely to lengthen the cycle. It is probably worth a try, but it may not help much.

Have you approached your vet about a different insulin? You have been on Canninsulin awhile with no great progress. In the UK, my understanding is that you have to try Canninsulin first, but if it doesn't work, your vet can prescribe something else. Several UK users here have been able to get Lantus or the European version of PZI.

To attach your spreadsheet, highlight the url on it and copy it. Then go back to the Control Panel, and choose Signature. Once there, paste that long url into the white box. Highlight it again and go up to the top of the box and choose the URL button. That will make it readable to us. Then choose Submit.

The increasing numbers could be the evidence you need to get your vet to prescribe Lantus under cascade rules. It worked for Saoirse, and she's tightly regulated now on Lantus. Pretty greens all day.

Can caninsulin stop working as well then? I thought when his numbers were good that it would remain effective but obviously not :( Am going to see the vet this week and take the spreadsheet along so fingers crossed we can get lantus xx Will have a go at putting the sheet on my signature thank you xxx

It's not so much that Caninsulin stops working. By its very nature it can leave a cat's BG outside the regulated range for most of the cycle. A typical Caninsulin cycle may keep the cat in regulated numbers for only 3-4 hours.

There may be other factors that influence the numbers such as undiagnosed infections, food changes, stress. Any additional information and observations of clinical signs you can provide to your vet will be helpful. For example, Saoirse was incredibly lethargic, depressed and hid for most of the day when she was being treated with Caninsulin, even when she spent most of the time in fairly good numbers. In addition to improved regulation on Lantus, because it agrees with her better she is more comfortable on the treatment. There's a case to argue for quality of life, not just regulation. How is Jasper doing overall, Mel?

Jasper is doing ok, he has always been a lazy cat, has never played with toys and a greedy greedy cat. He hasnt changed apart from the fact since his diagnoses (apart from when we were trying to get his bg to begin with - he was ferral like) he has been more affectionate loving cuddles. He really hasnt changed, we notice when his numbers are too low which has been twice and we nearly lost him the second time it was a really close call but since then he has been fine. I have made an appointment to see the vet next week so will go along and try persuasion to get lantus. They have been great with everything else so hopefully they will agree with me that lantus is the way forward x

Glad to hear Jasper's doing so well, Mel. The risk of hypo with Caninsulin scared the bejaybers out of me when Saoirse was on it, and seeing my poor wee girl so miserable on the stuff was really hard. Fingers and paws crossed for the Lantus Rx. Keep us posted with developments!
