Ugh, I left the vial of Lantus out on the counter for about 5 hours.... Darn!!! It is kind of chilly in here (64) so I am hoping that it wil be alright. However I also dropped the box yesterday, but I have a folded up paper towel inside that I hope cushioned it enough. Feeling like I can't do anything right.

I really need to get the vet to write a script for the pens next time.... I have perfect examples now of why it will be better than the vial.

Hi Kathie!

We've left out the Lantus for a few hours in its vial, too, and it was fine. I hope you're just as lucky  If not, the numbers will soon tell you.

Please note this little mishap on your SS, so that *if* the numbers go a bit wonky, we can be reminded that it may be the insulin having gone off, ok?

We all have days where we think we're just not getting it right! Hang in there!
Happy Caturday!

Hugs
Jane

I think most of us have done that at one time or another. Technically it says Lantus doesn't need to be refrigerated so you didn't do anything 'wrong'. Refrigerating it just keeps it 'fresher' longer. I am currently using a vial too altho' I've used the pens also. I keep both my vial (in it's box) AND a pen if I'm using one wrapped in a thick washcloth standing in a tall cottage cheese container. I grab the whole thing and take it to our 'place'. When I unwrap it, I automatically have a soft surface of the washcloth if I DO drop it. After drawing the dose, I wrap it right back up and stand it in the container. IF I forget to take it to fridge, it's still in it's box as well as wrapped - it's still cool for 3-4 hours.

It WILL be OK!!

Actually, the vial us best kept refrigerated. From Drugs.com:
Proper storage of Lantus vials:

Store new (unopened) vials in a refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Do not freeze Lantus vials. Store used (open) vials either in the refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C), or at room temperature, below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). Store away from heat and light. If Lantus vials has been frozen or overheated, throw it away. Throw away unrefrigerated or used vials after 28 days, even if they still contain medicine.

I left out one VERY IMPORTANT part in my explanation above...I keep the cottage cheese container on the shelf in the Fridge when we're not shooting!!!! Sorry...finger/brain disconnected today...

I left my lantus out of the fridge once for 12 hours. It lasted for 6 months so I hope yours does too:)

My vet had told me to roll it in my hands and gently turn it over and I learned very quickly not to do that after showing up here.
I also had it in the door of the fridge until Carl told someone else early on not to keep it in the door.

And I dropped mine twice in a row one night, full slam on hardwood floor and obviously ( according to Shadow ) my vial is still going fine.

we just have to do our best to be careful but it can happen....

Thanks TPR and Rhiannon and Shadow  I have done all those too: rolling the bottle, tipping it upside down, injecting air and keeping it in the refrigerator door. Two different vets told me that was the way to go. That was the first vial - I know better know. I still can't believe that I left the vial on the counter yesterday.... I hope it is still ok. Guess I will see soon if Zeus' numbers go higher.

My vet told me to roll it and tip it, too. I'd already read information here since I was traveling and couldn't start the insulin for a week after Leo's DX. I told her that Lantus doesn't need to be rolled, etc., because it's not a suspension. She looked at me and said, "Well, it wouldn't hurt. I'd go ahead and do it anyway." O_o

Hopefully all will be well. I thought our vial was going bad last week, and we did an increase, and magically it seemed like insulin was working again. Frustrating. I have a new vial, but I think I'll hold off for now.
