is my insulin ruined? i was/am so exhausted i forgot to refrigerate the N last night. now its 1 hr til shot time. do i immediately refrigerate if u think its ok? or leave out until shot? :YMSIGH: :YMSIGH: :YMSIGH: :? :? :? ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile

You have not ruined your insulin. It's ok to still use it.

Yes, stick it back in the fridge when you have a moment.

Leaving it out is not something you want to do a lot. It can cause the insulin to lose potency.

Many of us have done the same thing, left the insulin out overnight and it still works for our kitties.

Refrigerate now, take out when you need to draw out the insulin in 30 minutes.

thanks deb. its 5 wks old today and the one night i turned up the heat so house was a little warmer. i am so drained. it was out for abt 11 hrs. i took care of him last night, got ready for bed, and was shocked to not see it in fridge this morn. i had a horrible night, and nvr thot of it until i cdnt find it. :(

Re: left N out all night/ pmps 578 :((((

very sad and discouraged :(
pmps 578 :( nvr had a # evn in 500s that i know of :(
would think insulin isnt working but was working at plus6.

This is because the N type insulins only last 6 to 8 hours in many cats.

If you're up for it, testing and shooting every 8 hours (aka TID) may get you better control. I would start with 1.5 units every 8 hours (4 units per day, divided by 3, rounded up).

Another alternative is to do a curve where you test every 2 hours from shot to shot, then take that in to the vet to show that the N isn't working well for your cat and to request a better insulin such as PZI, Lantus, ProZinc, or Levemir.
