Lee has been OTJ since Sept and he is staggering His sugar is in the 30's I gave him some honey and he nibbled some food Help! This is the first time he has crashed

ok you have karo there? run some on his gums, not too much maybe just some on the tip of your finger. Will bump this up and keep bumping till more experienced members can help
Update when you can.

We rubbed honey on his gums, he seems a bit more steady. Scary there for a minute. He does not seem as wobbly he is now curled up in a sunny spot on the floor. He has been so good for so long that I have not been testing him as I probably should, he hates it, I hate it. It is no fun but necessary. I am just glad I was home and aware of the signs, thanks to this website. Glad you all are here. Let me go see how he is doing, will post again in a bit.

I'm a newbee, but I know you need to keep getting a little food into him, every 30 min, a teaspoon or 2, something High Carb, you do have a HYPO kit right? Test him every 30min to an hr, that honey won't hold him long, it's not a one time deal, you'll have to keep at it until he's back up in normal numbers without it.

Check the stickies up top for Dealing With Lower Numbers.

I'm sure others will be here soon to help you and good luck.

I'm not sure why he's crashing if he's not being given insulin - there may be something else going on here. Do you have access to a vet today? If he were mine, I'd take him in. I know you nor he likes testing but could this have been a faulty test strip giving a false number? Did you retest to verify?

I don't know enough to know what else might be causing it but I know someone else will be here shortly that will know more.

HUGS HUGS HUGS,

Give a bit more honey. Remember, the HC wears off and numbers can drop again.

I agree with Lyresa. Without insulin, you shouldn't be seeing a big drop in numbers. It's possible that Lee does run in low numbers but I wouldn't expect him to react this way. (Some cat's "normal" is in the 30s or 40s.)

I'd get him checked out by a vet.

Lee's normal has been in the 70's. His highs when he was diagnosed last August were in the 550's. He has been doing really well for quite a while. I have calmed down considerably and went back and read the post on dealing with low numbers and I have given him a bowl of Meow Mix crunchies, his personal fave, and his is tucking them in. He is not so disoriented as he was earlier, his pupils are back to normal and he is walking more steadily. I will stick him again here in a little bit.

I agree, if he's not on insulin, he shouldn't be experiencing hypoglycemia, and a vet visit is a great idea.
The other thing I thought, if he's been off the juice since September, is if your strips are still ok? Are they "fresh"?

Carl

To test the strips, you could test yourself and see what that reads.

I agree with the others on a vet visit. He shouldn't be going too low without insulin, if he's been eating normally.

I'm guessing Lee is climbing with the dry kibble - the few times Grayson needed to be raised, that was the quickest way to get him up. And it will definitely have a much more lasting effect than the honey or Karo. How's he doing now?

He is more alert and complaining loudly about getting his ear poked. His eyes are normal and his movements are normal, his is not staggering anymore. He is still at 30 so I gave him a bit more honey which he has decided to wear most of it. He is still nibbling the dry food but he ate a bunch so he probably needs to get it digested a bit. I am almost out of strips, down to 5 so I am going to have to run out and get a box.

No the pupil was not covering the iris but he was pretty dialated. They are back to normal now. What does it mean if the whole eye is black like that?

It can mean high blood pressure. If it stays that way and does not dilate back to normal in light, it means high blood pressure and is an emergency. My cat Andy had it I had to take to the ER for IV medicine or they told me his retinas could detach and he could go blind. How old is Lee? Is he of normal weight?

Terri

Please take Lee to an ER facility or your vet if they're open today.

There are other health issues which could cause a hypoglycemic episode when kitty is not receiving exogenous insulin.

This may not be as simple as bringing his numbers up with high carb food...

Vet, asap.

Stroke or other blood clot, high blood pressure, or seizure could cause the symptoms you described. This isn't something you can treat at home.

Lee's sugar is still low (28 before breakfast) but he is up, aware, walking around the house being himself and has eaten. The poor old thing is 16 years old and all things considered he is doing fairly well. We believe he might have had a mini stroke and the vet concurs. Time will tell...

Glad he's hanging in.

There's a Feline Assisted Feeding.support group; let me see if I can find the link.

Sending ((((((((((((healing vines))))))))))))))))) and :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: for your beautiful Lee..................Cindy & Sabrina cat_pet_icon

Glad you're able to stay on top of his numbers. I know it can be challenging sometimes. You're doing a great job!
