Leave Merlin home or let him stay at Dave's with drooler?

Hi-

I will be going away for a work event for 3 nights in a couple weeks. Merlin is a single cat who is pretty friendly and outgoing, he's not the scared type. My BF is home all day with his drooler who is STILL plugging along (though terminal and getting a little worse). He also has an indoor/outdoor cat Patches who has not been to the vet in a year - it's time.

We plan on doing a practice run this weekend to see how Merlin does in his house. He lives with his parents, so if they agree and the trial goes well, I may leave him with Dave as opposed to having my landlords cat-sit. He will get 24/7 attention and love with Dave....BUT....he's got that drooler. Dave can keep Merlin away from Patches. It's my understanding that they NEED to be separated because Patches could have a disease we don't know about from going outside and then transmit it to Merlin. The drooler is old and sick but sometimes barks at Patches so I assume she'd do that to Merlin.

So I guess what I'm asking is this: which sounds better for a cat...being in a strange environment with a drooler but being played with and loved on 24/7 -OR- staying in a familiar environment and only getting a tiny amount of attention? What the heck should I do?

Not sure what I would do either, perhaps wait and see how the trial goes and base the decision on that. The other thing I was thinking about is what about Merlin's Asthma? I'm assuming that Dave knows how to give his meds should he need them and you aren't there, does the Landlords also know what to do should Merlin need his asthma meds?

Maybe just take Merlin for a couple of hours trial to BF's and see how he reacts? If it seems to be going ok, extend the trial.

My guys would much rather be home with someone coming twice a day. But ECID.

The trial is worth a try. My experience is that most cats react badly to a change in location. When I adopted some of mine I had to syringe feed some of them since they wold not eat on their own. However, some like my Twigie and Bailey fit right in with no problems.

I would have to teach both the landlords and Dave how to do the inhaler. Merlin's only on it "as needed" - please don't freak out on me. I've been to two vets and they both said his condition doesn't warrant giving the inhaler daily. Luckily he doesn't pant anymore. If he coughs he needs the albuteral. It's very easy to give and M is very good.

He's also on slippery elm twice a day for his poop issues. He takes the slippery elm really well from a syringe. If I go slow he drinks it all down.

He's also in the process of switching food to raw. He's on half wet/half raw.

I'd rather have Dave take care of him. Since he's a single cat I feel pretty guilty leaving. Dave's situation with his drooler is getting a bit worse. She also has liquipoo issues at times but with a dog it's worse and she's not been getting outside to do it. He's been doing a lot of scrubbing. He's so good about it.

We'll see how the trial goes. It should be interesting. Boomer would have panicked, he was a friendly cat but nervous. Merlin doesn't really get worked up over people or critters. When the raccoon visited the other night he could care less. I'm hoping that's how he'll feel about the drooler.

How do you like my new avatar?
