Hi everyone,

My sweet kitty Buzz has been off of his insulin since Jan 2010, and we're on a wet, low-carb diet. Everything with his BG numbers is superb.

The only problem --- he's been having AWFUL hairballs. I'm talking slimy, disgusting hair wads that make a nasty mess 2-3 times per week. I asked my vet about it and he gave me some Laxatone, and I asked specifically if it was compatible with his being previously diabetic, and he said yes. I wanted to ask the experts though. :) It smells really maple-y and sweet... so I'm not sure. If the Laxatone isn't okay... what can I give him that works? I'm moving from my apt into a new house in a few weeks, and I do NOT want my carpets & new couches to be puked on.

P.S. - I've noticed that this has become much worse since we switched him from Purina DM to Friskies. Has the change in food done something to his digestive tract? I've read that fiber has something to do with them being able to pass the hairballs. Can I just add some fiber to his food?

Hi Ashley. Based on my experience only, Laxatone never causes any appreciable increase in Newkitty's blood sugar levels. It is sweet smelling and it probably will elevate BGs in some cats, but we have used it during the past 6 years several times and never saw any significant effect. I was always more worried that the feeling of the hairball in her stomach would keep her from eating...a much scarier scenario to me!

Hi Allie, thanks for your reply. I wouldn't think using it every now and then would be an issue either, but I was thinking more longterm use, as it directs you to give it daily for 2-3 days and then 2-3 times weekly. So, I'm looking for something that will permanently help with the hairball issue.

I read online that you can just add fiber to their food, starting with a small amount and gradually increasing to the recommended amount in around seven days, and then you can add that amount to their food daily. Does anyone know anything about this?

My sugar kitty Jason has been OTJ since November 2010, and on Laxatone since January 2011. I'll be honest - I actually use it more frequently than the directions dictate. Jason gets a small amount in his evening meal every night. If I skip a night, he pukes within a day. I haven't noticed any change in his BGs since he's been on it - he's pretty consistently around 60. Some cats might be more sensitive to it, but you could try it a couple times and keep a close eye on his BG to see what, if any, affect it has.
