My 9 yr old Simba was diagnosed on 4/25. Took him for a 2nd opinion on 6/13/11 since I was not happy with my previous vet, who by the way was my vet for 20 yrs....

The new vet said she may want to switch Simba from ProZinc to Lantus......I went on line to research more on Lantus, it said Lantus is a 24 hr inuslin dosage. Is this only for humans ? - Does this apply to feline ? - I think I have read here "FDMB" that some cats do take it twice. I usually go away on weekends to my summer home and would love to find an insulin that is only one time shot a day since I don't bring Simba with me on weekends. As of now my plans are on hold in going away on weekends since I need to inject him with ProZinc every 12 hrs.

Does my new vet want to switch Simba to Lantus because that's what she carries ? - I think she said she does NOT carry ProZinc, but I can't be certain on that.

Does anyone feel that one is better than the other ?

Lantus is twice daily for kitties. They metabolize insulin about twice that of humans.
I do not know of any vets that carry Lantus. It is a human insulin and available at human pharmacies
Most vets carry ProZinc since you need to go to special places to get it.

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't any insulin that's a once a day shot. Lantus and Levemir are long-acting insulin and both are x2/day injections since, as Larry noted, cats' metabolism is faster than a human's.

Lantus also has a documented track record for getting cats into remission.
