Lantus vs. Prozinc which would you choose?

I want to know the pros and cons of prozinc and lantus. If you had to choose between prozinc or lantus which would you choose and why? I am not happy with the vetsulin and want to switch but I want to know whether prozinc or lantus would be better.

I would go with Lantus (or Levemir). They are less expensive than ProZinc especially you get them from a Canadian pharmacy

You have to remember that ProZinc is a U40 insulin (400 units/10 ml) while Lantus/Levemir is u100 (1000 units/10 ml).
I would get the 3 ml disposable Lantus/Levemir pens since most cats use a a 10 ml vial of Lantus/Levemir before it looses effectiveness.
I also find a that Lantus/Levemir gives a flatter curve and thus you can get a lower average BG.

Might I ask why you want to switch? Your SS numbers are very good actually. The Vetsulin has good duration and you aren't getting fast BG dives after dosing, nor is there any bouncing going on. Your nadirs aren't super low but they're in a good range. If I had these results I'd be quite happy with how kitty's doing. I think with careful dose increases over time you'd get to more greens and blues rather than blues and yellows.

The vetsulin doesn't seem to last the full 12 hours. I just might be getting frustrated as her glucose numbers are getting higher so I am raising her insulin. I am frustrated as I want what's best for her and I hate the fact that her numbers are rising. I am very thankful that she hasn't had numbers that are extremely high but the numbers keep edging up and I don't like that, I want them in the greens. I know I am pushing for alot but I know it can be done.

You don't have many BG readings in the second half of cycles so it's hard to know what happens to the numbers then. The reason I said you're getting good duration from the Vetsulin is because for almost every cycle your AMPS and PMPS are very similar. If the duration was too short you'd expect the PMPSs to be consistently higher and that's not happening. Skylar is remarkably steady in her response to the insulin. Kitties can vary in their best dose over time. In two months you've mostly dosed between 2 and 3 u. It's possible that her best dose at this point in time is a little more than 3 u. You can certainly choose a different insulin but my advice would be to adjust the Vetsulin dose upward slowly to see if the numbers come down and give you more greens. No need to rush it. There's no guarantee that Lantuus or ProZinc would be any better.

I agree. The vetsulin seems to be working pretty well. I'd probably try 3.25 for a few days, she how it goes, and if it's still not getting you to around 100 at the lowest point after a few days, try 3.5. Get curves whenever you can. The more info the better.

I'm glad you posted this question. I have been thinking about switching smoky to prozinc or Lantus from vetsulin. I would be ecstatic to get those numbers for smoky. I know that every cat is different though. Smoky bounces and also "dives" into lower numbers too fast on vetsulin.

A lot depends on if you want to have some flexibility in when you give the shot (ProZinc or Version) or if you can always be home on time and never be late with the shot (Lantus or Levemir)

Yes, the numbers do look pretty good for your kitty. Skylar looks pretty well regulated.

Leo has been on Lantus, Prozinc, then Levemir. He responded most to Prozinc. But Leo has Acromegaly...which just recently got treated with radiation. So he is a high dose kitty. Prozinc is expensive, but at low doses it might be worth it to try for your kitty if you decide to switch. While on Prozinc, I was using U100 syringes and doing conversions to apply the appropriate dose. It wasn't that hard. Levemir is easy to get, and is cheap - both are good advantages.

Assuming that depot dosing was manageable, I'd switch to Lantus or Levemir - on the right dose the BG tends to be typically smoother over the 24-hour period and also the Roomp-Rand study posted superior remission rates for cats treated with Lantus within 6 months of first Dx (not sure about Lev but that may be as good - see attached doc for further info).
