Tortie:

Do you have a name we can call you ;-)

When cats are bouncing, they will eventually clear it. Sometimes it can take up to six cycles (72 hours) before they clear the hormones and glycogen out of their system and if that is the case, you might see the numbers stay high until they clear. Some cats clear the bounce in less than 72 hours and that's when the numbers come down. You are in control if you are testing to see if the numbers come down.

In order to get help if her numbers start dropping, then just post it in your subject line....+4 150 need help please and we'll try and be sure someone catches it. Just breathe. Testing is your friend and giving her food if she is coming down quickly will help. But posting for help is the best thing to do because we can help you figure out exactly what to give her and when.

OK?

I'm chiming in w/ the others , the morning high BG numbers are probably a bounce from an overnight low.

Yes I'll stay awake for her tonight. Now is almost +3, I'll do some more test every 3 hrs ( if she let me!)& post on the SS
You don't need to stay up all night, just set a couple of alarms. when Tess slept w/ us all night , I'd just turn on the light and test right there in bed and back to sleep. This can be very draining, especially in the beginning.

If it is a bounce, is she in danger? Do I have to treat her with food like a hypo?
if you see Rosey dropping very fast give her a little low carb food, if that doesn't slow her down or she goes too low feed higher carb food or a drop of syrup added to some low carb.

thanks for flagging tortie's post for us, cathy! you're awesome.

i saw that you said earlier that your cat hasn't had food for 12 hours - a diabetic cat needs food more often than 2x a day. food is really important for helping to regulate their blood glucose. i feed my cat with his shot (3oz low carb canned), 3 hours later (1.5oz) and give him boiled chicken for treats after the tests. so he eats 4 times a day.

if a cat is crazy hungry, that could mean their blood sugar is low and you should test the BG and give them food.

what you're describing sounds like your cat might be getting too much insulin, going too low and soaring too high. this might be a dangerous situation, but without blood glucose numbers it's hard to know. if you have changed from dry food to low carb canned food her need for insulin may have dramatically changed.

we'd be glad to help you figure things out. we all have diabetic cats and lots of experience. please post again, either with the link that cathy gave you, which takes you to all lantus users where someone is on nearly 24 hrs a day, or here on this same thread. you've got several lantus users watching this one now. we have a member in Hong Kong who used lantus and her cat went off of insulin. she doesn't post now, but we could try to reach her for you if you'd like.

I've tested her at +3 her number is 436. Is she safe? She seems a bit thirsty. My dear Rosy put up with my constant bugging her while shes slept! I've woke the rest of the gang in the middle of the night... Now everybody having fun in an over night party! Too bad the buffet table is not in service any more!

The HK member, is she Sun? I've got in contact with her already. She taught me alot on the caring for Rosy & the switch to canned food
Rosy is fed 4 times a day, it's after the PM shot that she went w/o food. I was unable to feed her during the night because of the 21 furry members around. Cannot leave food over night. I am trying hard to switch everybody to have canned.

The test at +6 is 284. She's in the yellow zone now, probably the nadir. I'll move over to the Lantus TR

Rosy may have a late nadir, it would tell you a lot to get a +8. Can you stand it? It's what, just after 5am there? :YMHUG: :YMHUG: That 150+ point drop in 3 hours is a lot. Fast drops in BG like those can trigger the bouncing that you are seeing in the morning hours.

Julie has a good point, most of us give several small meals before the nadir, this helps to even out the impact of the carbs. Human diabetics do the same thing , several small meal rather than one or two big ones. The important thing is not to have food for the 2 hours before the preshot test. You don't want any food influence showing there. Other times it isn't as important, but if you are going to teat and feed, test first.
