Lantus TR VS Relaxed Lantus

Tight Regulation

Lantus users who follow an intensive protocol often called Tight Regulation. Lots of good info and knowledgeable people. If you are not using this protocol but do use Lantus, you will probably be happier in the "Relaxed" Lantus user group.

As opposed to:

"Relaxed" Lantus

A forum for Lantus users who are not on the intensive protocol known as "Tight Regulation." Please note that there is also a lot of useful information about Lantus already in the Tight Regulation forum.

The difference is that one doesn't use the Tight Regulation Protocol as much as the other one does.

Hope that helps, too.

I read that........but still didn't see any place where it showed the differences. In other words, if my Vet tells me to reduce the dose by .25 and I do the reduction, am I to understand that I am now going by the Relaxed Lantus?

Just to make things more confusing, there are some people who are following the Start Low, Go Slow Approach or SLGS but still post in this forum. For example, Carla/Furball follows that approach, but she lowered the reduction point to 50 because she found the 90 suggested in SLGS method wasn't working for Furball. People who follow SLGS will put something like that in their signature so that people giving suggestions take that into consideration.

So feel free to post where you want. There are more people on the TR forum and more likely to be someone here at most hours of the day for help.

Another thing to keep in mind from the sticky on the TR protocol:
The suggested "guidelines" in the Tight Regulation Protocol are just that... guidelines. Not hard and fast rules.
The Tight Regulation Protocol is a great place to start, but once you gain experience and knowledge of YOUR cat's response to insulin you may find yourself in need of tweaking and refining your approach to treating your cat's diabetes. "Every cat is different" is not just a slogan. Following suggested guidelines is a great place to start, but some kitties will force us to think outside the box.
A lot of people here have done customizations for their cat. If you want to try what your vet suggests and reduce by .25, remember that you hold the syringe. The decision is yours. Just be prepared that if the numbers rise, you may have to increase again.

I believe when you follow the relaxed Lantus method, you hold the dose longer. Instead of increasing the dose by .25 after six cycles (three days), you would wait five days (or something like that).

There really isn't a reason to move. This is where the most eyes are. Some of the people who move to relaxed forum aren't testing as often, especially during one of the cycles...like they are skipping the pm cycle tests.
But either way, we are just one big happy family.... ;-)

There isn't a protocol for the relaxed forum. generally, people who can't get enough tests in to follow Tight Regulation (one preshot test and at least one mid-cycle test for each cycle) might choose to go with the relaxed forum. It was started a couple of years ago for people who didn't want or weren't able to follow TR.

the Start Low Go Slow method was developed (i think) before the Tight Regulation Protocol was, so it was in use for years prior to TR. The TR protocol is the only protocol published in a scientific journal for how to treat diabetic cats.

When I was working with an adopter of a kitty diagnosed as diabetic, I couldn't get over there to test very often and she had major vision and arthritis problems.

Fortunately, he got off the insulin in about 4 weeks ... which consisted of me testing him and going "OMG - he's too low (31mg/dL!!!) and we need to feed him!", despite the fact that he always has food out (canned low carb and low carb dry), or "I'll run a curve today" and deciding it wouldn't be safe for her to shoot from that point on. Any later tests were within normal range.
