Hi! I am switching to Lantus tonite for the 1st time. Got the Solostar pen & a friend gave me 100U needles with 1/2mL on the side. Are these correct? I didn't fill the rx I got the from vet & got the Solostar pen from a friend. Help! Thanks alot! These syringes have no 1/2 units listed on them or 1/4 either.

Hi, someone from the Lantus group will be replying to you soon. How soon until you have to give the insulin shot?

Yes you have the correct syringes - Lantus is a U100 insulin. You're going to have to eyeball that half unit. When you can, you might want to drop by Walmart and get a 10 pack of their ReliOn syringes with half unit markings. That will at least show you how much that is. If the pen is new, just pull the foil seal off, you'll find a rubber seal underneath...that's where you draw. After you finish with it, wrap it in something soft (I use a washcloth) and put it in a container standing on a fridge shelf. Don't put it in the door, jars it too much.

GREAT JOB! You got it goin' on already!!!

BIG HUG and HAPPY DANCE!

Hi and Welcome to FDMB! Those syringes are fine for now. What dose are you shooting? If it is a full unit no problem, if not then getting an in between dose is a bit of a guessing game. That's why we like the U100 31G 3/10cc 3/8" syringes:
  • U100 (you must use U100 syringes w/ U 100 insulin)
31guage (needle size, the thinest and least painful)
3/10cc (volume of insulin the syringe will hold, the more it holds the fatter the barrel and the unit lines will be closer together and harder to see)
3/8" (needle length, short is usually better)
half unit markings (absolutely needed when you start getting into quarter or half unit doses, we nearly always change doses by .25u or at the most .5u increments)

There are several different brands, Walmart seems to be about the only place to get the half unit marked syringes retail. You can get them online cheaper in the future.

Thanks ladies for your help!

Please tell me where I can get these syringes online at a cheap price. I'm on a very tight budget now. Thanks so much! My cat Red says thank you too!

There is a blue button at the top of the page "ADW" it is a link to American Diabetes Wholesale. They have the best prices around for most diabetic supplies. You can also get lancets and strips for most meters there at a really good price.

Please, use those shopping links, the FDMB gets a commission and it doesn't cost you any extra. Donations and these commissions are what pay the expenses to keep this site online. And I'm not recommending ADW just because the site gets a commission, I saw they had an affiliate program and got Rebecca to sign up w/ them because they are a great place to shop. We are all volunteers here, including the webmaster, and too often she ends up paying expenses out of her own pocket.
