The instructions say to not refrigerate the opened pen.
Is that what you guys have been doing?
I posted about my cat's numbers climbing and I am wondering if the insulin is not good, because I haven't been refrigerating it.
It is only 20 days old, and I will start using a new pen in 8 days.

Just not used to using insulin that has not been kept in the fridge!

Help!
 
As suggested to u in ur other thread, u might want to read the information stickies up above on how to use lantus, storage, filling the shed and so forth.

you do not need to start a new thread for a new question, just keep all ur concerns in ur original thread, information and help can get lost that way.

have u been using lantus since november 2009 when ur cat was DX'd?
 
yes, been using lantus since she was diagnosed.
got the pens on 12/30 with the coupon.

curious about refrigeration....is there an answer? i will look in the sticky.

The info you are asking is to be found in the stickies at the top of the page of threads.

Do you have a spreadsheet with your cat's BG numbers? Are you using Lantus and if yes, when did you start? Also, what dose are you giving at the moment?

In order to get best help, each person in this Lantus section starts a new thread at the start of the day, and all questions and info are put in repies in that thread for the entire day. I know that you had posted another thread somewhere but I don't know what the subj line was or what info was in that thread. It is quite difficult to reply when only a part of the story is in a thread.

If you can create your signature and ss with your cat's BG numbers and dose given info, people can be much more helpful in replying to your questions. You can get help in the tech forum to create your signature and ss, and others here can also help you.
You can click on the links at the bottom of my reply to see my cat's ss and also her lab results, just to give you an idea of what info I record that is viewable by others.

As for the lantus cartridges, I keep mine in the frig, both the open one I am using and also the ones in the box not yet open.

But I will answer this for you - ALWAYS refrigerate Lantus. No matter what vessel it comes in, opened, unopened, always keep in fridge.

Why - because it will ensure that it lasts longer.

Remember this is a human insulin and the instructions are directed at humans not cats. The idea of the pen is so humans can easily carry it with them, hence why they say no fridge needed. They will also use it up much faster than a cat.

If you want to ensure your duration, keep it fridged.
 
One of the members here who is also active in the German forum posted about this in a thread in the Think Tank, I believe. (Her name is Monique but the thread was on the old Board where she used the handle mmair.) There is considerable discussion about how long Lantus, once opened, remains potent. The manufacturer recommends that it be discarded after 28 days. Members here and elsewhere have found that they can use Lantus longer. Others, have found that 28 days is about right.

With respect to refrigeration, we typically keep Lantus refrigerated. You're right, though, that the box indicates that it does not require refrigeration once opened. Apparently, this is an innovation which makes Lantus much more transportable -- in other words, you can travel knowing that your insulin is safe without needing to be kept cold. However, this information presumes that it is a human that is using Lantus and the doses are larger than what we typically give to a cat. As a result, the cartridge is used up much more quickly. In contrast, I don't honestly know if the lack of refrigeration applies to the vials. I don't believe that it does. This being the case, given that we are able to use the cartridges for our cats much longer than for a human and that the vials need to be refrigerated, I would refrigerate the cartridge. Even if it's ultimately not necessary, it's not going to hurt the insulin.
 
Quick Question.. how much is Lantus per month? I go the pens with the coupon too.. just wondering.. for future reference.
