OK, so I buy the 5 pack, and was told that it lasts 28 days, EVEN IF KEPT IN REFRIGERATOR. I keep my in-use pen in a zip lock, in the refrigerator, just because I don't really trust insulin left out in the room temperature. I was wondering if others notice whether they can keep using it past the 28 day marker, if kept in the fridge. Anyone?

I've used a pen cartridge for longer than 28 days, no problem. It was kept in the body of the fridge.

If you refrigerate it on a stationary shelf, it may last up to 6 months.
A pharmacist will tell you it is good for 28 days because that is all that was submitted to the FDA, for human use.

The pens are good until the expiration date on the box as long as they haven't been used

Even once used, you should be able to use them to the last drop. The company that makes Lantus only asked the FDA for 28 days, so that's all they can legally say

Wow. I've tossed so many pens, thinking they were not going to work any more. It's a crime. I read online how people said that they noticed the Lantus had lost strength past the 28 day marker that I thought those deadlines were true. But even my vet admitted that they kept insulin far longer than those dates. Well, thank you all for this info. It's priceless.

Also I think it heavily depends on how you treat them. Aka not keeping out of temperature, storing in a statonary place in the fridge, not shaking, not shooting excess insulin back into the pen while drawing it out, etc. When treated properly they will last longer.

I've used a vial of levemir for 6 months, and didn't notice any decrease in potency. Lantus might be a little less shelf-stable due to the difference in chemistry, but you probably can get a few months out of a pen once it's opened. The unopened pens are good until the expiration printed on them

One vet said a used lantus pen should be fine for months as long as stored in fridge, Another vet at a different practice said 6 weeks tops. I havent had enough personal experience to have an opinion yet. I do know the 28 days is the FDA prescribed term for humans, for which this pen is designed to be kept at room temp in purses, on-the-go, in pockets and briefcases or such. For us who refrigerate it for our pets, the FDA doesnt have a set time limit because this is a human insulin.
