i'm feeling a bit slapped by one of your members and i just want to know if it is appropriate to call on lantus when a lantus hypo is in progress over on health. i will add the link. i've never posted a pm to me before but was just so taken aback by it. i know how to handle a hypo but should'nt i put a shout out to lantus as i, a pzi'er, know less about that insulin than you do. :?

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=24199

and fwiw, i was with this hypo from the beginning

I think it's totally appropriate for you to post on this board to ask for help when someone on health needs it, especially if the kitty is using Lantus.

I don't think you implied that only one kind of insulin user can help the other. I understood that you were helping yourself, and also calling on the wealth of experience that is Lantus Land.

If I had been the one with the hypo, I would have appreciated greatly the call for additional help from knowledgeable people, wherever they are on the board.

agreed. many with no experience with lantus would have thought the same as you, over at that +7 so yes, it is always good to have eyes around that are knowledgeable about a particular insulin as they would understand what was going on and could explain it as the numbers start dropping again and for such an extended period of time.

i remember back in the day when i saw this very thing happen and i had no idea what was going on and i reached out to people, i.e. jill, jojo, etc....and asked them stuff like "can you take a look at this? something odd about this one." it was those situations that got me to read and learn about other insulins, including lantus, looooooong before i started using it.

yes, a hypo is a hypo is a hypo. the goal ultimately to save the cat's life but a hypo is not a hypo is not a hypo. they each have the potential to be different than the last one we saw or from the next one we will see.

posting a shout out for help when a hypo is occurring to peeps who use and are familiar with a particular insulin has been standard practice on fdmb in the 4+ years i've been here. yes, a hypo is a hypo, but each insulin has their own nuances. it just makes sense to look for lantus eyes for a hypo on lantus just as it makes sense to look for pzi eyes for a hypo on pzi. that's not to say others are not willing or able help...

ok, i decided to delete the pm that was sent to me.
thank you for the acknowledgment that it was NOT cool to talk to me that way. that helped me to cool off.
lori
pzi friend to lantus
as all pzi'ers are i think.

i'm too new to comment on board protocol, but i can say this: i have seen members from all over the board respond to ours and others' posts, and have watched with admiration when you and others pull folks in from all forums to help when there is need. I'm no Pollyanna, but arent we all one community here working to fight an ugly disease? please keep doing what you are doing, Lori...we are grateful for the help!

This newbie emphatically seconds what Celi said!

yes celi, we are! and the last year or two we have'nt been as much so...but you know i'm starting to have faith that the newbie's of the last year or so will pick up the good vibes that this board always had and carry them forward. this place is like a family, and we have some family issues  but things seem to be getting better.
you brand newbie's would'nt even believe some of the generosity of love time and money that has gone on here since i've been a member. i've often been blown away and it has at times restored my belief in the great side of people.
peace out kitty mama's :-D

I truly admire the time you spend making sure that dangerous situations get all the attention they need. I've seen your call outs and followed this on.
I don't know what was said to you, but my apologies on behalf of my fellow LLers. No one should be dissed for getting help where it was needed. Thank you for all you do.

Since peeps are reading this i want to add that i thought there was an incredibley important lesson in this particular hypo...ESPECIALLY for old timers. That's not usually the case.
This cat had been treated for 10 years on lantus by a very responsible mom who just got a little lax on testing cause it was always in the same range and the shots were always the same. so she skipped a few tests. Now I know that could happen to me or anyone after years of sameness...however this ONE time it was different and lead to a 16 hour pretty severe hypo that was only discovered becuase napping kitty did'nt wake up. she thought he'd had a stroke or anything but a HYPO. then she tested.
Is'nt this an excellent reminder...
should be brought up from time to time.
old timers stay vigilent.
i for one NEVER knew a hypo could go on that long.
6-8 hours max. i'm just a pzi'er.

The whole board is a community--I believe that posts from othe forums are answered as quickly as someone spots it over here--I think the forums have changed for the better in the 2 1/2 yrs I am here--We can only speak for ourselves-
I think it is getting better--We are the ones who can make it that way--This is a disease that affects us to our core!!
We need to all help each other--I thought we all did that--Sorry for anyone who had a bad experience--

no roni you are absolutely right, we are a community, and the dire beasties affecting our precious babies are our main concern. 99% of the time it is all about helping each other and that is pretty high. and believe me there is nothing that compares to the lantus room for support 24/7. you guys do rise to the occassion all the time.
an occassional bad experience i guess is to be expected. but it's all cleared up now.
this thread now is about learning this usually unspoken topic of 'old timer complacency"
which now i think i'll bring up in think tank as it needs to be spoken of more often.
IMHO

Hi Lori

Yes I believe you did the right thing. At FD we are all a community, all in the same boat so to speak. I would welcome the help no matter where it came from. Of course with all the different personalities there is bound to be bad experiences. I for one am grateful for all the support I get from this board. FD is part of me and kitties life.

Your right this hypo just shows us to not slack off. Knowledge is knowledge.
