Lantus Increase

Good Morning,

I posted this in the Lantus forum but am hoping to get feed back asap, so I didn't think it would hurt to post here, also. If I shouldn't do that in the future, please let me know.

I have been giving my cat, Chase, .5 units of Lantus daily, since he was newly diagnosed 2 weeks ago. I did a glucose curve at home and his lowest reading was 254. The vet wants his Lantus increased to 1.5 units twice daily. Why is she going up 2 units instead of one. I thought it was best to raise the dosage slowly. Can you someone please give me feedback asap, as she wants me to start doing this immediately. I'm a little nervous.

To clarify: you were giving 0.5 u of Lantus only once a day? Am I correct? This insulin needs to be given twice a day. Experienced users recommend increasing the dose u 0.25 u at a time. I suggest you go post in the Lantus/Levemir forum and put the big question mark icon in front of your thread title (menu to the left of the thread title bar). You're right to be nervous and you need good advice from those people.

Kris, since she says her vet has upped it by 2U I think she must be dosing twice a day at 0.5U.

Yes, Sandi, that's a very large increase. We don't recommend increasing by any more than 0.25 at a time. It helps ensure that you don't go past the correct dose for your kitty, and helps keep Kitty safe.

We have a spreadsheet that we use to track our kitties' glucose and progress, and I'd like to invite you to use it. It is a real help to be able to see how your cat is progressing, and it makes it easier for us, too, to give you advice. HERE is the link to the spreadsheet and instruction on setting it up, and THIS will help you understand how we enter data. If you have any problems setting it up, just sing out and someone will give you a hand.

It would also be helpful if you could fill out you "signature" with some pertinent information, such as your name, kitty's name and age, type of insulin, type of meter, type of food, any other health concerns, all that sort of thing. To do that all you need to do is click on your name in the dark blue banner at the top of the page; you will see a drop-down menu and the second thing on the menu will be Signature. Just click on that and you can fill in the info (we are only able to use three lines so be as brief as possible while still supplying info. You can separate information using a / or a |.
