I have another thread but it is 2 pages long so I was told to start a new one. My cat is on Lantus and I was told by users of this message board that I should not give the insulin if the blood sugar is less than 200. Do you give the insulin whether or not the cat eats, only based on the blood sugar? Do you give the insulin before, during, or after the meal?

The normal pattern for Lantus is test, feed, and shoot, all within about 15 minutes.

As you acquire data on how your cat responds to Lantus, that no shoot number may be carefully reduced.

When you have a number under 200 (or your current no shoot number), stall 15-20 minutes without feeding and retest. You want to see a rising number and preferably over your no shot limit.

And if the cat needs a procedure requiring sedation, a vet may ask you to completely skip the dose or may ask you to give half the dose, even though the cat has not eaten. The cat can break down fat to create carbohydrates if food is not being consumed.

The under 200 rule is for new members since they dont have enough data to know if shooting low wont take the cat dangerously low - or how to handle it if they do.

Over time, with testing and tracking of results (for example in one of our spreadsheets) you will start to see how your cats BG behaves and know how to handle it. But for the first few times we ask that new members post the number and ask for support and generally a more experienced member will coach them through it.

Experienced members do it all the time and in fact its something everyone will have to learn how to do, since as their cat gets regulated it will spend more time in these numbers but not quite be ready to come off insulin entirely.
