? Lantus expiration and filling at pharmacy help

Was just at the Walmart pharmacy to get syringes, and to check on a price for Lantus. They told me they can’t use any kind of discount codes because the vets don’t have NPI numbers..I called the ER vet Mimi was at for 6 days one, because they are open and two -they know her the best at this point. I asked if any vets there have NPIs and they said vets can’t even get it and it‘a usually the pharmacist themselves that push it through, which wasn’t the way I heard it at the pharmacy. They implied it was impossible because their computers will decline it.?

Anyone in the states know what the deal is with that!?

On to the expiration- the pharmacist there said Lantus expires in 28 days.....
So- if it’s 300$ a month- how does anyone afford this??? I’ve read that it lasts 6 months... I’m ready to fake diabetes somehow so I can get a prescription for Lantus for myself because this is ridiculous.

Rosa I can’t answer the question about discounts because I don’t live in the US but your insulin should last 6 months if you keep it in the frig.

Thank god... why do they say 28 days? You know I think I read it depends on the type of insulin.

One thing I will say, side note, is every time I have gone to the pharmacy to buy 10 syringes at a time (you can’t buy more and I was also waiting for the RX)
Everyone was so concerned when they found out my kitty has diabetes. People really do love animals, and it warms my heart when I experience it!

Our boy Tommy was just discharged after almost a week from DKA. We are completely new to this this week but I wanted to add that the vet at the emergency and specialty hospital told us 5 months in the refrigerator for Lantus--I'm sure it varies between vets. I was relieved! My husband is on the way to our Safeway and I am hoping that the discount card will work. I called ahead and the pharmacist said they would put it in and see if it works. Fingers crossed :) I have to work 3 days straight and won't see my little guy until Monday morning but he is in hubs loving hands! This is hard

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Have you started your own thread yet.?
I can't see a thread so could you please start one on the main forum page and we will help you.
If your kitty Tommy is coming home today from hospital after having DKA it is really important that you are doing certain things to make sure he continues to improve.
I don't want to hijack this thread with your information.
I will watch for your thread.

I have used a pen until pretty much the last drop -- 3 mos.

As for cost, the cost for insulin in the US is ridiculous. Many people here purchase their insulin from Mark's Marine Pharmacy in Vancouver. @Chris & China (GA) can provide you with details. The cost is about 1/3 of what it costs in the US.
