Samuel, one of my feline family members, has been diagnosed with diabetes approx. 5 weeks ago, and has been on Caninsulin on a steadily-increasing dose during that time. After reading information on this forum and talking with Samuel's vet we've decided to switch to Lantus. Looking on this forum it seems like the Tight Regulation Protocol is likely to give Samuel the best chance of remission, and so I would like to try that. Unfortunately this protocol calls for chances of 0.5u and 0.25u, and the lantus which was bought today at the chemist for Samuel comes in solostar pens with 1u dosage gradations. Is it still possible to use the Tight Regulation Protocol somehow without needing to buy entirely new packages of insulin without the pens? It was already pretty darn expensive buying this first lot...

You need to buy a box of separate insulin syringes, U100, 3/10cc, 30 or 31 gauge needles, 8mm needle length with half unit markings.

WalMart sells boxes of 100 for $12.88

Then you just take the cap off the pen and there's a little rubber stopper just like in the vial and you use your syringes to pull out the correct dose....You don't use the "dial-a-dose" feature on the pen itself.

Hi, and welcome to Lantus/ Levemir Land. We don't use the needles that are made for the pens, we use a syringe and just treat the pen like a mini-vial. it's actually much more economical to to buy it this way.

The syringes that you used w/ the Caninsulin can't be used w/ Lantus. Caninsulin is U40 insulin (40 units per cc), Lantus is U100 (100 units per cc). You need to use the correct syringes to get the correct dose.

Where do you live? In the US Caninsulin is called Vetsulin, so I assume you don't live here. We have members all over the world so we may know someone who can recommend resources for you.

Thank you both very much for the advice. Samuel had his first dose of Lantus tonight, and while he's still got a ways to go before his diabetes is under control, the starting dose seemed about as effective as the rather higher dosage of Caninsulin we were giving him previously.

I'm in Australia, by the way. I go to the University of Queensland, so I was thinking I might try to pick the brain of Dr. Rand some time on campus, since he wrote the paper :)
