I was getting some food out of the fridge and knocked the box of lantus cartridges onto the floor and was worried they might have broken. They were in the plastic sleeves and in the box so hopefully they will be fine. They look alright. I spoke to the pharmacist and he said they are made of plastic and not glass and not to worry too much about it. I had some old nearly empty cartridges that I was going to throw out so I did a few tests throwing those on the floor as you do. :) They seem almost indestructible. It is time to declutter the fridge.

Yeah those pens are GREAT!...especially if you've broken a vial or two and watched that liquid gold seep across the floor knowing there was nothing you could do about it at that point

I panicked when the box of cartridges fell out of the fridge as I thought they might break. When you say pen do you mean the cartridge is encased in a pen? I have the cartridges that go into the pens without the pen.

Yeah the only thing most of us can get is the actual Solostar pen

After reading about the pens I am going to ask the pharmacist about buying those rather than just the cartridges as it seems the cartridges in the pens would be less likely to break if dropped.

If anyone is still using vials of insulin, I used to put mine in a pill bottle with cotton or a paper towel around it to keep it snug. It protected my vial when it was knocked on to my floor by my cat several times. You only need to take the top off the bottle to draw the insulin.

With both the pens and cartridges, the little glass vial is encased in plastic and should provide the same protection against breaking due to droppings.
When I first started Lantus, both pens and cartridges were available in the USA and I go the cartridges since they were a little less expensive.

Thank you Larry. That is good to know. The cartridges can't be just glass and the covering of plastic makes sense because I did test how breakable the cartridges were with an old cartridge that was ready to be thrown out. I threw it in the laundry sink without the plastic sleeve it sits in in the box as well as threw it on the ground when it was in the old box and it survived all dropping experiments. :) Anyone watching what I was doing without knowing would have thought that my lack of sleep these days had finally gotten to me and that I needed some therapy. :)
