Lantus and better numbers

Hi All,
Flame has been doing very well recently and I could use a little advice as to where to go from here.

I, finally, set up his spreadsheet. It starts when he was diagnosed in June 2014 with a few entries, but then I fast forwarded to 9/1/14 because nothing truly exceptional happened between those months and quite frankly since I was just setting it up today that task to enter the entire time was just too daunting..

I have been getting some really good numbers pre shot. I work during the day week days so rarely get the +4 +5 +6 numbers. Sorry.

He is on Lantus and eating Purina DM with Trader Joes cat tuna and boiled chicken with juice morning and night. He was having some constipation issues and when I started boiling the chicken and giving him the broth with some of the chicken it seemed to help him out.

My questions are.... Where do we go from here? Am I doing the right thing with his Lantus? I don't want him on a roller coaster, but I also don't want to shoot too much when he has nice low numbers. Are we close to a possible remission here? I use the ReliOn Confirm meter.

Any advice or comments are welcome. I hope everyone is having a wonderful Saturday.

Thank you,

Julie and Flame

Hi Julie and flame

I am new here and new to lantus so can't really advise but it's great that you got the spreadsheet set up. Now it's up and running it is easy to maintain and I find a great visual presentation of what is going on.

I am sure you will get some great answers here but you might also like to post/join one of the lantus forums either relaxed or tight regulation. If you are struggling to get tests other than the preshot tests then you might head for the relaxed forum.

Best wishes

Sarah

Here is some basic information on how Lantus works.

Lantus takes roughly 5-7 days to show its dose effect on the first dose used.
It takes 3-5 days to stabilize on later doses.
The dose is increased based on the nadir, the lowest glucose after a shot, after the waiting periods above.
The pre-shot numbers only tell you if it might be safe to shoot.

One thing I see is that you keep changing your dose. It needs to be the same both AM and PM, and as close to 12 hours apart as possible.
I would suggest sticking with 0.5 units at both shots for 3-5 full days, then evaluating what needs to happen

We suggest new users use 200 mg/dL on a human glucometer as a no shot limit until they have mid-cycle data showing if reducing that will be safe. Then, it may gradually be reduced to 150 mg/dL on a human glucometer. Any lower than that, and you should be posting in the Lantus Tight Regulation forum for reviews and feedback.

If you get a pre-test below your no shot limit, stall 30 minutes without feeding and re-test. If not rising and above 150 mg/dL on a human glucometer, unless you can be home to monitor, you probably should skip.

See my signature link Glucometer Notes for more details on what the various glucometer numbers may be.

Lantus stores best in a refrigerator, on a stationary shelf.

Could you please insert a blank line between the switch in insulins? That'll make it more clear when it happened. Data were omitted from the spreadsheet.

Thank you both very much.
I apologize for not being clear. Flame has been on only Lantus from first diagnosis. June 2014. I only omitted some months for time sake and because there was not much change in what was happening.
I will absolutely try staying at .5 for 5 days and record what is happening. That is one of the things I thought I may be doing incorrectly.
I just joined the Lantus group today and ,as always, look forward to all the expert advice.
Thank you, Julie and Flame.

Flame did wonderfully on the 0.5 unit! That was wonderful advice!
After eight days, his numbers are such that we may be in the beginning of a remission! :o
For the past four days he has had little to no Lantus.
I am cautiously optimistic.
