Lancing the Ears

I know I have seen postings and video of where to "stick" the kitty's ear. I know where the "sweet spot" is, but my question is how far up and down the (posterior) edge of the ear is good for sampling? I just want to make sure I do not damage Kushi's ears. I am assuming that only the posterior edge is good for sampling??

I actually use the thicker inner edge of the ear, about 2/3 of the way down. The sweet spot you've seen is but one spot that works :)

i do the outermost edge of the ears, anywhere from that extra flap of skin all the way up to about maybe 1/4 inch from the top. been doing that since 2006 with Mousie.

fwiw, i've never tried the innerside (toward the center of their head) only 'cause I doubt Mousie would let me but I've seen plenty of others who do use that part with no problems.

The most important thing to do so you won't damage the ears is to put pressure on the spot immediately after getting the blood droplet on the strip. I've been sticking Gandalf's ears for 6 years now. You would hardly know it, except that a couple spots may have scar tissue as they don't bleed easily anymore. Always vary the places you use and rotate ears - one side AM, other side PM.

I rotate between two spots, the sweet spot noted in the pictures and the spot right above the little triangle flap at the bottom of the ear. Did Tucker's(GA) ear that way for years with no issue. Kiki does a little better at the higher part of the ear, but the bottom part is training well to give blood.

Hi I am new and not sure how to navigate yet! Sorry! How do I get to this video or a picture of where to 'stick' his ear? The group has convinced me I need to do this (I thought so too!) so am getting the kit and strips, but am unclear exactly where the "sweet spot" is!! Thank you so much!

Thank you Sue for the links. Very helpful. I will need to sit on him to do this. I can see a fun future. I have bookmarked for the future. I did introduce myself as a newbie and got several replies, which is how I was convinced that I had to learn how to do this for him, whether he likes it or not! I believe that was yesterday. The title is just what you said "Newbie" and shows posted by Lilly.

Thanks again for showing me, as I need to get this far enough into my brain to have it become 'nothing but a thing'. I just have not had the time to research the site well enough yet (that is a yet) to find the important and live saving ideas you all have here. I have learned much in just the day or so I have been here and it is greatly appreciated, as I am on the ceiling. With all this great assistance, I'll be back down with my feet on the ground in a few days! Maybe my heart will stop pounding and my head will stop spinning too. LOL! ;) Thank you!

All good! And I incorporate some of all of theses suggestions. I have also found that when Kushi is napping, I can stick her and she doesn't even open her eyes!

It is helpful to shine a flashlight through the ear -- the vein shows up as a black line

The blood flows up from the center of the head (inside edge of ear) and down around the outside edge of the ear.

It helps to "milk" the ear and grow the blood drop by gently squeezing on the lower outside edge of the ear -- basically pushing the blood backwards up the ear and out the tiny poked hole.
