I purchased relion me ter
yesterday and purchased lancets .33 gauge. i tried it and couldn't get enough blood to test. do I need larger size? Thanks.

many use lancets that are 28, 29, or 30.

The 33 usually makes too small a hole

If you are free-handing instead of using a clicker for the lancet, you could try making two pokes very close together

I use the 33 gauge. I found that it requires a quick, slanted, shallow poke (very shallow - like barely going in). If you poke deep with the 33g, it is more difficult to get the blood.

I used to use Reli-on brand lancets, fine grade which I think is 30 or 31 gauge. They seemed to work OK until I tried BD Ultra fine II lancets, 30 gauge. What a difference! They simply seem to be sharper and almost always produce just the right amount of blood for my meter, the Accu-check Aviva. That's important because some meters work with very small drops and some don't, so you need a lancet which produces enough blood. The Aviva works with very small drop, which I prefer.

I use a relion ultima. Since than relion has come out with two more meters. One is the relion confirm, I can't remember what the other one is called. Don't know which one of the relions you bought but the confirm takes less blood than the ultima. If you don't have it I would recommend buying one. The strips are different but they cost the same as the ultima. The confirm meter is also is $9. I bought one for my father to keep track of his bg. It was hard for him to get enough blood for my ultima, but since using the confirm it was no problem at all.

I use one touch fine point lancets without any problems. They worked out better for me than the relion brand. Remember most lancets will fit into most lancet devices.

Good luck with getting blood.

Hi analiese,

I free-hand and am currently using CVS 30 gauge lancets...

They rarely require a second poke which is good because I need to get in and out as quickly as possible...

x2 - Another vote for the BD UltraFine II 30 gauge lancets. I use mine in a pen device with the cap removed and the puncture setting on the shallowest depth. This gives just enough blood for the Freestyle Freedom meter - provided I don't screw up and hit the vein.
