Need to give Smokie,my 17 year old diabetic cat with CRI, some L-lysine for sneezing.
She recently got over a bout of severe diarrhea and i wonder if the L-lysine would make her tummy feel bad (in case her tummy is still tender) She is eating well and not vomiting
but i want to be sure.
thank, maryjo

Hmmm...I don't know. My cat didn't have any problems with L-lysine. In fact, he loved it. Then again, it's probably b/c my vet gave me one that turned out to be too carb-y. Can't remember the exact name...Optitex? It was in a silver foil bag with an orange label.

Could the runs be from stress? My vet said that Junior's sneezing was from stress. Sure enough, once his BG got down, his sneezing stopped. Of course as I'm typing this, I hear him sneezing in the background.

MaryJo,

You may want to reconsider giving lysine - especially given how hard she is to treat. The 'bloom has fallen off that rose' so to speak among some of the feline specialists....aka...we really do not think it is all that helpful for herpes and it can cause an arginine deficiency.

Personally, I have not found it to be helpful.

One well-documented case (yes..only an n=1) was a kitten that I adopted out to a friend. Full disclosure of probable herpes.

Cat is now 4 years old:

Lysine was given for the first 2 years of life. Patient had periodic flare-ups.

Lysine NOT given for the past 2 years....actually slightly better but certainly no worse.

I am just not a fan of giving lysine to sneezy cats anymore....especially if it is going be a stressful hassle.

Hi Dr. Lisa,
I have been crushing the L-lysine pill into a powder and sprinkling it
in her food. She takes it well.

Smokie is out of remission now and i am trying to get her back to where she was.
The sneezing is worse when she is eating.
We are having a tough old time and i'm kind of whinny right now.

Thanks for the information on L-lysine, Dr. Lisa. i don't want to take any chances with
anything that may cause harm.
Maryjo
