L-Lysine gel for diabetic kitty - ingredients question

I suspect that one of my kitties has a herpes infection. She will go through period of sneezing and weepy eyes. My foster kitty occasionally has sneezing fits, and it wouldn't hurt to start him on it either. I can't mix it in with the food since I won't know how much each kitty is getting. Yoda is a pig and my civie Daisy is a very light grazer.

There are two L-lysine gels on the market that I can find:

Enisyl-F: http://www.entirelypets.com/enisoral.html

Ingredients: Purified water, L-Lysine HCI, sorbitol, cod liver oil, xanthan gum, tuna flavor, soya lecithin, silica aerogel, caramel color, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate.

and Viralys gel: http://www.entirelypets.com/vetvigel5oz.html

Ingredients Purified water, L-Lysine HCI, sodium carboxymethlcellulose, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, artificial sweetner, maple flavor, citric acid and riboflavin 5' - phosphate sodium.

The Enisyl has sorbitol, which is an artificial sweetener best I can tell. The Viralys lists the artificial sweetener plus maple flavor - which probably has sugar in it too.

My foster kitty is OTJ, and I don't want to do anything that will compromise that. Has anyone successfully used either of these products with their sugar kitty? If all else fails, I'll just give it to my civie, but I would like to give it to Yoda too.

Of the two you listed I would go with Viralys gel since the other has sorbitol which is an alcohol like Xylitol and not recommended for cats or dogs.

Thanks Larry! I did not know that about sorbitol. Very surprising they would include that in a product for pets.

From research with human diabetics, artificial sweeteners will not raise glucose levels. We'll just have to run an experiment to make sure there is nothing bad in the "maple flavoring"

Kelly, I don't have any experience with either of those products. I have used Duralactin L-lysine paste, it's very palatable, works great....but very pricey! I looked at those products when I was using it all the time, decided not to go that route because I wasn't sure Tinkles would like the flavor.

You could use the capsules for Yoda if you can't use the gel for him...just open and pour half on food. I used TwinLabs brand, nothing in it to affect BG. It doesn't seem to affect flavor. If you have a Hanaford near you, that's where I found the best price.

I use Now brands l-lysine powder from http://www.iherb.com too, and just sprinkle some over the food each meal.

It is an amino acid, ie a protein building block, which if needed, will be used and if not needed as a protein, the nitrogen chunks (NH3 or NH4, aka ammonia) will be broken off (they're excreted through urine) and the rest of the molecule will be broken down for calories.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I really don't want to use the powder because the two boys will end up with a much larger dose than my civie, the one who really needs it. I need a way to ensure she is getting enough to control the symptoms :-D

I already ordered the viralys gel, and I will post once we get it how well it is received!

Another option is to measure a specific amount of powder into a bit of yummy canned food she will eat.

'Nothing like covert ops with the food!

Te problem with some artificial sweeteners is that they are toxic to the liver for dogs/cats.
