Hi there!
LC was diagnosed with diabetes in December of 2013, but it is likely he has had it for a while now.
Insulin: Lantus
Current Dose: 3 Units 2x a day
Food: He primarily eats Purina DM, but sometimes he'll eat wet food of various brands - primarily the Trader Joes Tuna, but also Fancy Feast or 10Lives when he gets picky with Trader Joes. I used Binky's list to procure.
He used to eat Natural Balance LID with Salmon. I still have to use 1/4 cup of that a day to supplement his dry food because he has loose stools and they are very, very smelly since implementing Purina DM (only him, not the other cats who steal his nosh, either? Go figure)
Curves? Not yet, I started a couple curves but they have only 5-7 readings per day and things are still relativly new and I am not sure he's stable.
BG Meter is Alpha Trak, set to code for cat
Siblings: LC is the oldest cat at around 12-13 (we think) and he has a 11-12 year old brother who had Fatty Liver Disease twice (syringe fed him back to life both times) and we have adopted a new kitten around 9 months old that we found in the alley.
I work a standard 7 - 4 job, and my husband is a musician so he's around at odd hours during the day to help - which is really nice. My son is 14 and lives with us part time and is relatively useless - he helps with the kitten a lot.
We don't completely free feed, but all three cats get 3 bowls of wet food twice a day and LC gets a dry food snack in the afternoon and then we put some dry food out at night - if we go to bed without putting dry food out, he wakes us up at 4 am screaming for food - so it's self preservation. The other cats do eat his dry food, but mostly he eats it.
My biggest issue is the smell of his poop - it is so strong it takes over the whole house. We have to sift the litter box 2-3 times a day to protect our home. If we are around, we let him outside (high fence that he never jumps) and he can go outsout which we prefer, but it's horrible if I am working and my husband has a gig or rehearsal and they are home alone for 4+ hours...
If you have any suggestions about smelly cat, thanks!
I have a ss but I don't know how to attach it and I haven't taken bg for a week or so (my husband won't do it unless i really am doing a curve becuase he hates how LC's ears look after a day of BG)
