Hi there!
LC was diagnosed with diabetes in December of 2013, but it is likely he has had it for a while now.

Insulin: Lantus
Current Dose: 3 Units 2x a day
Food: He primarily eats Purina DM, but sometimes he'll eat wet food of various brands - primarily the Trader Joes Tuna, but also Fancy Feast or 10Lives when he gets picky with Trader Joes. I used Binky's list to procure.
He used to eat Natural Balance LID with Salmon. I still have to use 1/4 cup of that a day to supplement his dry food because he has loose stools and they are very, very smelly since implementing Purina DM (only him, not the other cats who steal his nosh, either? Go figure)
Curves? Not yet, I started a couple curves but they have only 5-7 readings per day and things are still relativly new and I am not sure he's stable.
BG Meter is Alpha Trak, set to code for cat
Siblings: LC is the oldest cat at around 12-13 (we think) and he has a 11-12 year old brother who had Fatty Liver Disease twice (syringe fed him back to life both times) and we have adopted a new kitten around 9 months old that we found in the alley.
I work a standard 7 - 4 job, and my husband is a musician so he's around at odd hours during the day to help - which is really nice. My son is 14 and lives with us part time and is relatively useless - he helps with the kitten a lot.

We don't completely free feed, but all three cats get 3 bowls of wet food twice a day and LC gets a dry food snack in the afternoon and then we put some dry food out at night - if we go to bed without putting dry food out, he wakes us up at 4 am screaming for food - so it's self preservation. The other cats do eat his dry food, but mostly he eats it.

My biggest issue is the smell of his poop - it is so strong it takes over the whole house. We have to sift the litter box 2-3 times a day to protect our home. If we are around, we let him outside (high fence that he never jumps) and he can go outsout which we prefer, but it's horrible if I am working and my husband has a gig or rehearsal and they are home alone for 4+ hours...

If you have any suggestions about smelly cat, thanks! :-)
I have a ss but I don't know how to attach it and I haven't taken bg for a week or so (my husband won't do it unless i really am doing a curve becuase he hates how LC's ears look after a day of BG)

The smelly poop can be because he isn't digesting the food properly.

If you remove all dry food completely and only feed low carb wet food, you may find that his insulin needs will drop and his poop may not be as smelly.

Janet & Binky's food chart is a bit out of date, so you may want to check out Dr. Lisa's food chart on her website which is more current....www.catinfo.org

You may also find that if you keep to one brand and one flavor, this will help with the digestion too. Cats, unlike humans do not need a lot of variety in their food and too many flavors can actually upset their tummies.

Many suggest only giving fish flavors once or twice a week at most - due to the high mercury content.

Welcome LC and LC's Mom!

I agree with Hillary: ditch the dry food completely. Catinfo.org has an updated and expanded version of Janet and Binky's list that will give you a few more food options.

You can also leave the wet food out overnight; just add a bit more water to it to keep it from drying out.

You want to make sure you apply pressure after every poke to reduce scabbing and bruising. The ears take a little bit of time to "learn to bleed," but once they do, you won't even be able to tell that you test LC. If you consistently test a few times a day, within a couple of weeks, this bruising and scabbing will go away. It will also help with determining the proper dose and getting him better regulated/more stable. You might not even have to do curves any longer since you're going to be getting data every cycle instead of just one cycle once every couple of weeks or so, which only tells you how he did during that specific cycle and can be very misleading (especially if he's bouncing).

Some cats improve if given a probiotic such as Intelliflora, Forti Flora, or a teaspoon of plain yogurt with active cultures (if not dairy sensitive).

Thanks all! I like the idea of a probiotic. All the cats like Purina DM, but LC LOVES it. He doesn't like the wet food. It did like one brand, but I find that if I serve him the same food for too long he gets bored with it. He loves dry food and actually only this year began eating wet food.

Hey lady! I've been having really good luck weaning the Theo cat off of the dry stuff (he's an addict) by putting a modest amount of the dry stuff on top of his wet food. Last night we had half a can completely dry stuff free with no complains and much yums. :D
