Kitty -- vet trip today 6/2

I came home at lunch today and caught Kitty going to the litter box. I thought I would check for Ketones. Well, when she got to the box, she just dribbled and it looked dark to me. I tought, oh no-- UTI-- then I said -- no way. Then I figured I better error on the side of caution and took her to the vet--- glad I did-- UTI positive. She is on Zeniquin.

So, now I am a nervous wreck --- Please no DKA. I, like a fool, forgot to ask if there were any ketones present. But, when I got home, I gave her the pill and caught her heading to the box and got a test-- negative. But, I am nervous. At least I don't think it will blind side me this time.

My normal vet wasn't there, so I saw a new one. He was voted the best vet in Eatern NC by his peers. He is a great orthopedic surgeon. He told me to increase Kitty's insulin if the high numbers continued after the UTI is gone. He said to go to 5 units. I will not increase that much at one time. But, he did say not to worry about how much it takes, to just find a sweet spot and try to keep her between 100 and 200.

I will concentrate on the bg once the infection is clear. My focus is on -- no DKA from the infection.


Good news-- if there was any-- no glucose in her urine.

I liked the vet and his attitude toward DM. He never rolled his eyes concerning home testing ! I didn't show him the ss-that probably would have gotten him!!!!!

So, please send good vibes for no DKA.
 
I must hear DKA in my sleep but you can't panic. Is she eating? drinking? NO KETONES!!! as long as she eats and has no ketones, you know you are okay. Test, test, test you know but you have learned so much and this time you know the signs, it will be fine. Glad you caught the infection, probably #2 reason for DKA .... if left untreated and you are treating it but not a good time to try and reduce insulin.

BUT you caught it!! see you are getting better! I truly believe we can stop DKA with knowledge!

It can't blind side you ever again. Look at how much you have learned since then. Look at how quickly you were on top of this. Good for you.

To try to ease your mind check for ketones every day, the strips are cheap enough and you will know for sure and not have to worry as much, if they start showing up you wisk her back to the vet to head off DKA.

Yes, she is eating and drinking! I would not have know anything was going on if I didn't catch her in the box. Hopefully, I have caught it early.

I am assuming the sub qs have to also help ward off the ketones. If I am not mistaken, sub qs are the treatment for low level ketones.

The vet said I should see improvement in 2 days. Also, when she had DKA she was only getting 2 units of insulin once a day. She is now getting between 7 and 8. I will be sure to give max doses until the infection is clear.

Uggggg... I'm breathing!
 
You are becoming a real pro with all these different issues! Glad you caught it early and she got on medication. It is a different situation than the first time - you are more experienced, you test for ketones, you give sub q fluids, she is getting appropriate doses of insulin. I know it is easy for us to tell you not to worry, but I hope you will spend a lot of time breathing and not worry too much.
 
Not surprised---pmps 481-- gave 4.25.

She ate 2 cans of FF.

If it is this high in the morning, I might take her in to get some R.

It's so funny about the SS. I thought I was doing so good printing my SS out & taking it in. NOT! I will never do that again. That's when they said "you don't need to test so often" :roll: I flat out told them the next time I was there that I was going to continue to test & there was no way I was gonna inject her with insulin blind!
 
Ok --I have been thinking. Should I just take her to ER vet for iv antibiotics to knock it out or wait it out tonight?
 
Her #'s are up because of the infection, you know this .... she is eating, she has no ketones and you JUST caught the infection. I would pour a glass of good Napa wine and read my email .....
 
Sending healing vibes! Sweet Kitty, feel better soon! You are doing all the right things. Caught the infection early, testing for ketones, fluids, etc. I completely understand why you're nervous, but like everyone has said...breathe. You are giving Kitty the best care.
 
Robin, I did it six times...... I'm not sure it is helping!!!!!


She wanted some more food, so I fed her 1/3 can more.

I just got back from buying another bottle of ketone strips and another container of bg test strips. I am taking vacation tomorrow to stay home and monitor her and I just canceled my weekend trip to the beach!

Now if I can just get a Xanax perscription!

Then you're not doing it right. Throw your shoulders back, sit up straight, slooowely breath in as much air as you can through your nose to the count of 4, hold it for a few seconds, slowely blow it out through your mouth to the count of 4. Repeat, repeat.

Now go pour that glass of wine.

I do the breathing slightly different . I breathe in to a count of 4, hold it to a count of 7, and breathe out to a count of 8.But I agree about the wine! :mrgreen:

Just know that you are the most awesomest momma bean goin Kim.
You caught this early and you know what to look for.

A glass of vino will be good for what ails you.... Or maybe a margarita :mrgreen:
 
Sorry to hear of Kitty's UTI. My Shaikha has one as well, so she just started antibiotics (again) today. This time she'll likely be on them for a long time since her life this year has been one long UTI, more or less. Hope you can get the dosing situation sorted out and can dodge the DKA. How did Kitty manage not to throw glucose in her urine, though? I still haven't figured that out. Shaikha seems to always have sugar in hers and of course the bacteria love it.

Oh dear, another UTI! Seems to be a theme today. Poor Kitty. I hope she is feeling better soon! I wouldn't go to the ER unless she is in distress - it will just exhaust you and stress her out. She is on A/Bs now, and they will kick in soon. If you want to raise an extra .25 in the AM I would go for it. It is fine to move in 0.5 increments if you aren't close to good #s, sometimes 0.25 increments are not enough.

Okay, she is drinking a lot and missing the litter box. She has always been very neat concerning litter--- she is not squatting enough in the box-- I assume she is in some pain. She has spotted some urine on the rug where she is sleeping.

Hopefully, this will all subside when the infection clears.

I just tested for ketones again-- neg.

How quick can ketones appear-- hours, days?

Cats that have UTIs can also have pain, so not using the litterbox is common. Shaikha peed on the bed and on the floor, so I knew something was up. If Kitty seems to be straining in the litterbox or sits to pee and not much happens, she likely is in pain (as someone who gets UTIs and kidney infections often myself, I can attest to the pain factor!). If the antibiotic doesn't clear up that quickly, you may want to talk to the vet about pain medicine as well as checking to ensure there is no blockage. Can't help you on the ketones, but hopefully someone will know.
