Milo has been otj since December 20, 2009. Here is a link to his chart https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key ... tS2c&hl=en

Milo was doing great, that is until we went on vacation for a week. Our neighbor came over everyday to feed both our cats their low carb food. As you will see, I tested Milo when we got home and his number was a little high for him--- 150 vs usually under 100.. but I thought this was due to our being away and that getting back to a normal routine would bring his numbers down. After a week of being back, I tested Milo again, and his number jumped to 266. I have decided to start shots of lantus again, but just giving him .5 units twice a day right now. What has me very confused is his numbers are not going down. Has anyone else ever experienced this with a kitty who was previously otj???? confused_cat

oh yes, it can definitely happen.

how old is your lantus? new? if not, it could be bad insulin.

also, when was he to the vet last time? missing you could have caused some stress but if things don't improve within a few days of having you back, i'd probably get him in to the vet for a checkup. another health problem, i.e. infections, injuries, pain, etc....can cause glucose levels to rise. don't fret just yet though because if that's the case, once the problem is taken care of, he will probably go back into remission.

Milo was last at the vet on May 24, 2010 for a full exam. At that time, we had his teeth cleaned. They also did a fructosamine test and said it showed he was doing great off the insulin. I used the coupon for the free pens last year and have been storing the pens in our fridge since probably November. However, I didn't need to use them them since he went OTJ. The insulin looks clear and the expiration date is not until March of 2012. I would assume since it had not been used it would still be good??? Maybe not? I am really wondering if something else is going on and another trip to the vet may be in our near future.

yeah, if unused/unopened i would think your insulin is fine.

and yeah, i think a vet visit will be due very soon.

i know this may be completely out of line but is your petsitter someone you know very well? had they petsat before for you? any chance they weren't clear on something and possibly gave something he shouldn't have had? i only ask that because my sister had her neighbor/best friend watch their dog a couple times for them and when they'd come home, the dog had destroyed so much stuff....chewed thru a wooden gate, ripped the screens off the back windows, pulled bushes out of the yard, etc.... my sister suspected the dog wasn't getting the daily walks she preferred so the next time they went out of town she asked if i could do it so every morning & night i would stop by and take care of the dog and take her for her walk.....or i should say she took me since she had her route memorized and was a strong dog :-).....and not a single thing got destroyed that time. sooooooooooo i can't help but always question the sitter, just in case :)

First, sorry your kitty's back on the juice.

From looking at your spreadsheet, it looks like you've only been giving shots for a day or two. If you used Lantus before (maybe you forgot) that it's cumulative and will take a few days to "fill the shed". Take a look at those "stickies" again in the Lantus forum it will likely explain this.

Good luck. Hope you're back OTJ soon!

Weeble,

You are right about the shed. I was thinking about that last night. I guess I forgot for a moment...really just overwhelmed by his numbers and not really thinking clearly ohmygod_smile

Milo's preshot number this morning was 150, so maybe his "shed" is getting there. I was a bc though and only gave him .25 of insulin this morning. I am going home for lunch today to test and see where he is at.

As for our cat sitter, she is our neighbor and has taken care of the cats for us over long weekends many times before. I have no doubt that she did everything I asked her to do. We walk her dog most evenings and she had been there for me through this whole process... In fact she knows my cats well enough to mention she didn't think Milo's fur was looking quite right. I am really wondering if I screwed up by having her put out their regular food in the morning along with frozen food. I am thinking my cats probably ate the frozen food as it was thawing and then didn't eat again until the next morning when she came over again. Next time, I am investing in the timed feeders!! Might have saved us from this relapse, if that is what it was.

I think a visit to the vet for a check would not hurt. Get blood and urine checked for any infections. And while there, maybe have the vet take a peek at the teeth.

There are so many things that can cause the BG to rise, but then clear those problems and down come the numbers.

Good luck and I hope he's back OTJ soon.
